I use acrylic ink.  It acts like a stain.  I brush it on, it soaks in and leaves no brush marks.  The yellow flames were done with acrylic ink too.  There are many colors to choose from.  Once the color is on I finish them with poly for the shine.  I get it sent from Walmart but the hobby stores have it too.

It's Amsterdam #315 Pyrrole Red.  Picture just for reference.  It goes a long way just like stain.
