Howdy,

Just getting into wood carving and small wood projects. Don't have much room to store many big tools. So sticking to the smaller stuff for now. I have a jigsaw, Dremel, and various hand tools and knives. That's about my all I have in my war chest.

I haven't quite started carving yet, but have been reading online, YouTube, and reading the Woodcarver Magazine.

I started buying all my tools, knives, and some wood about 6 months ago much to my wife's dismay. Have it ready to go. By the time I bought things and had everything ready, summer hit. WAY to hot to sit outside for any length of time. So I'm looking forward to fall coming up.

I'll be spending a lot of time outside, smoking my pipe, and playing with sharp objects and wood. What could be better?!

Glad to be here, and look forward to being around the forums.

Welcome to the forum VS!

Have you considered carving pipes?  Seems like a natural fit!

You might have to buy pre-made blanks at first, but if you end up with a few bigger tools it's easy to make your own too.

I have thought about making pipes. Looked into prices of briar and such. There's a lot more that goes into making a quality price of briar than I realized.

I might save that for retirement.... If I ever get to retire 😄 at the current rate everything is going. 20 years Ill be 63 so we'll see then.

I've made a couple out of wood I had on hand.  Took up smoking again after I got divorced, then quit again after a while.

I used cherry burl (to the extent one finds cherry burl) and mesquite.  What you look for is pin holes in burls, those cause a leak and will eventually burn through.  You can get this stuff called water glass (a magnesium silicate if I remember correctly) that you can use to plug any holes like that, but I've never tried it.  If I had kept up with the habit, I was going to use some to repair a cute old meerschaum pipe that belonged to my grandfather.  Might still do that and pass the pipe along to someone who uses them.

At any rate, while briar burl is the commercial standard, you can use virtually any hardwood within reason (I wouldn't use tropical exotics or desert ironwood, those are likely to impart some irritating fumes from their oils until you get a good cake built up).  If all you have invested is some hobby time, it need not last a lifetime of smoking.  If you plan to sell them one day, then you would need to use the industry standard wood, but if not, tons of readily available woods work just fine.

Welcome to the forums @VagueScorpio. Great group of guys here. I have zero talent when it comes to carving but we do have some very skilled carvers on the forums. Hope you'll  stay with us.

We could have used the Corporate Jet, but @Larry Buskirk borrowed it last to go to get "Best Taco's in the World".

Well I was wondering what happened to the OLD plane. Maybe Larry can fix it, he fixes everything else that comes his way. :throbbinghead:
