Delta 34-740 motor issues.

Featured Replies

Hello. I have an older Delta 34-740 I was building a chicken brooder box and the motor quit. The blade spins free but I don't know what to you or how to get a replacement motor. I'm in East TN. Thanks! Shona

Hello Shona, and welcome aboard.  I am not familiar with this saw, when I googled it, it looks like a direct drive contractor type saw.  Likely a new motor will cost more than a new saw:(

That said, did you look it over to see if there was a "reset" button on the motor?  Usually red, when pressed the saw ought to start working again.

When you said the motor quit, what do you mean?  Were you running a board through and it bogged down and quit?  Did you finish your cut, shut the saw off and it will not start again?  Did you smell anything (not so) funny - like electrical?  See any smoke from the motor?

Did you check your electrical outlet to be sure you didn't trip a breaker or blow a fuse?  Did you check that the cord was still plugged in?

Several things to check out before heading to the store or ordering up a new motor.

Woodworkers usually are decent mechanics.  Take the motor out (look at a parts diagram for a clue on which bolts to remove) ( and expect to be occasionally wrong!).  Once you have the motor out, find a motor repair shop.  They should be able to tell you what's wrong without much fuss, and then tell you the repair cost.  Another approach is to pull the motor, find the frame number, and then google that frame number to see what replacements you can get on line.

According to this wiring diagram, there should be a circuit breaker next to the power switch. Also, the motor is a capacitor start type. If the motor "hums" but doesn't turn, most likely one or both of the capacitors needs replacing.

I had a 34-780 and it was notorious for tripping the breaker
