they are called fault lines, and are laid on the ground, fixed in place with 3/8' diameter spikes (thus the holes), and are used to define legal shooting positions or areas for pistol matches.  we also have 4 foot long ones and 2 foot long ones, as well as 3'x3' square boxes that can be placed wherever the match director or stage designer sees fit.

 

used for IDPA, USPSA, 2/3 gun matches, and Steel Challenge matches.  

 

we were getting low, so they asked for 20 more 8 footers, which are actually 7'-9", so they will fit in the Conex container, which has an 8' high ceiling.
