Router - Stuck? - Black and Decker 7614 (1)

Featured Replies

Below are two pictures of a recent "freebie" router I acquired. It seems to be in good shape.

BUT:

When I attempt to raise or lower the motor (twisting the large nob n the picture), nothing moves - the knob will not rotate. I can rotate the smaller/inner knob, but the motor still doesn't move.

Could I be missing something - a catch or something not released? Any other ideas?

Thanks for any help!

Bill

Welcome to the forum!  As for the router, it looks like to lock is loosened, so it should move. It may be possible that the gear on the knob is stripped, or the rack (on the motor) is missing a tooth or 2, both of which i would think is unlikely. Can you just pull the motor out of the base? If not, it may just be the motor housing  has corroded to the inside of the base, not sure I oulwd deal with that but I'm thinking some brute force method will be the only solution.

Pull the lever straight up and try, if that doesn't do it loosen the bolt from the lever a bit and try.

Larry: No dice - I loosened the bolt from the lever - enough that the lever is floppy.

Looks like more disassembly will be required.

Lew: Thanks - I read the manual.

Fred: I'll try some more disassembly. (Pulling on the motor doesn't seem to budge it.

Question: Anyone ever taken apart the movement control? Is there for example an important screw under the metallic label?

Lew: That's what I thought, and I think I can feel it if I run my nail over the label.

Fixed - good enough!

Still not sure what was  (is?) wrong.

o Took out some screws.

o Punched a hole through that label - took that screw out too.

o Couldn't really get anything apart, but accidentally discovered that if I laid the router - so to speak - on its back, I could wind the motor up!

o After several cycles, seemed to get better and better.

o So I put everything back together, spritzed the area around the cog a couple times with WD-40.

Seems to work OK for now.
