December 13, 20232 yr Popular Post Resaws.. Had been run through a Lunch Box Planer, to get them all about the same thickness...the fancy one stayed home...hand sawed apart, the planed and sanded flat.. Shudder to think what that Lunch Box would have done... Anyway...had to trim a few edges and widths.. May sort through this mess, and keep a couple items, for later...wound up with .. A "book" of long slats, and.. A "Book" of shorter slats...and a couple like this one.. The fancy pair? Well, they were trimmed up a bit... One on the left will become a couple drawer fronts...with the one on the right being the top of the case...to be built.. May use the live edges for something else? Unless I need a few more "parts"? Stay tuned....
December 13, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Ok..Making a couple panels, that The Single Brain Cell Sketch Up decided I needed to make...sorted through the dozen longer slats.. Panel #1 and... Panel #2...both looking rather gappy....we have ways.. Straighten the edges were the Stanley No. 5-1/2c....to get things close. Plane is a bit hard to keep level...so.. These 2 and a square, to refine things...dry fits to check for gaps... There is a light pencil mark, in the shape of a "V"...to help with alignment...Rinse and repeat..Until.. Glue, clamps and doubled cauls.. Panel #1. Set aside, and repeat everything for Panel #2.. Was running low on c clamps...used the 6" H-F ones, instead....pine scraps were cut down for the cauls... Now, as for the trimmed up fancy boards? One with the split going ( Growing?) on, will become 2 drawer fronts...the one without the split, will become the top of the case...have to align the grain so it wraps down the front. Panel #1 will be cut to form the two sides of the case. Panel #2 will be the start of a base for the case.. Joinery? Debate is between through Dovetails...or 1/4" finger joints...Drawers? wait and see...
December 13, 20232 yr Author Popular Post One hour In the shop, today...then the area between the shoulder blades started to hurt...quitting time! Got the drawer fronts ripped to width, for now.. Everything else went off the panel for the top of the case.. Had to rip the bottom panel for width..and get it flat ( drawer will be sliding on it..) Sides will connect to the top panel and this panel.. Just have to decide how....Dovetails, or Finger/box joints... Stay tuned..
December 15, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Laundry Detail this evening...already had one corner done..before Tried to do Corner #2...miss-cut twice ( Bass-ackwards) so..the next time to the shop, with the clothes hamper... Lots of double and triple checking, THIS time...corner #2 is FINALLY dry fitted.. This is what one will see when looking down at the top of the case Laid out and sawed the pins for corner #3 Extra "clamp" to keep things from moving around too much... Right now, I am plum tuckered out, and sore....Bp went up, too...might try again tomorrow? Drawer Fronts and a Divider.. Needs trimmed for length,,...once I find out what it needs to be... So...does anyone want to see the joinery "details"? Might be a bit boring to some...? Stay tuned...

December 15, 20232 yr Author 1300 hours start time..will see how things go...then do a step by step photo blog about dovetails? Stay tuned...
December 15, 20232 yr Author Quitting time! Corners #3 and #4 and done...going to need a new bandsaw blade, though...broke it.. Film after I finish a late lunch...
December 15, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Ok...Layout tools.. Bevel Gauge by Stanley SW, 6".....Stanley No.77 SW mortise/marking gauge, Swanson 6" combo square.. Has a single pin on one face, and an adjustable double pin for marking out a mortise... Where I spent half of the shop time...getting well worn? Or, just broke in? Set this up high, for better lighting..pins laid out ( this is for Corner #4, BTW) That stick is an Anti-racking Device...I drop the part down low, to make the saw cuts.. Last saw cut....then a bit of chopping.. Starting on the "Show Face" chop about half way down....prevents blow-outs when I turn it over and finish the chops.. Pins are done. Stand this up onto the side panel...chin to clamp things steady....SHARP pencil to trace around the pins...marking gauge to cut a baseline...bandsaw to cut the waste out...was a bit easier than chopping....just needed a small file for clean-up...dry fit #3 corner.. Almost right off the saw..rinse and repeat for #4 corner.. Getting better at this? Corner #3 was a bit on the tight side, needed a "helper".. Hitting the block means less damage done..full dry fit? While I pre-set a few clamps.. Dados and rebates will be next on the list... Stay tuned..
December 18, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Well....glue-ups happen, I guess... Clamps, cauls, Glue and a brush...hardest part? Holding 2 cauls in place while holding a clamp in place on the cauls...and trying to tighten the clamp...at the same time Some cussing was involved?But... Included a diagonal clamp..to pull things into "Square-ness" Letting this sit a spell...will see how it looks tomorrow? Need to glue the back on...need a spacer block for that. Drawers will start Tuesday...we'll see.. Stay tuned
December 21, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Back has been glued in place...after the case has been cleaned up and checked for square.. But...because that shelf the top drawer will ride on bowed up...I needed to add a spacer block.. Today, the clamps came off, that spacer came out...time to see how well the drawer fronts fit.. Meh...These are supposed to sit flush with the front of the case.. Didn't want them to get stuck...and have to pry them back out.. So...today was a joinery day... In that I needed to mill rebates on the bottom edges of these drawer fronts.. Too small the use the Stanley 45..so..we have ways.. One pass, move the fence closer to the blade for a second pass...rebates done...Rips and cross cuts next.. Plus a plywood panel for the bottom of the drawer...Decided to do the top drawer, today... Front corners are through dovetails, and the back sits in rebates at the back of the sides...plywood bottom then was cut to fit... Dovetails glued up...back glued in place..bead of glue all around for the bottom panel... The red c clamp? Had to fix a crack...dovetails and the clamp to hold things in place, while the glue sets up. Also dug out a couple knobs for the drawers.. These take a 1/4" dowel as a "tenon"...then are glued in place...thinking maybe one per drawer, centered up? Bottom drawer, tomorrow? Then a base to sit this on? Stay tuned..

December 21, 20232 yr Just wondering with all this furniture being created will there be a home addition to house all of it?
