I think Minwax (cough, cough) markets a paste wax that at least some folks have said works well. The paste wax also makes the wood slide across the cast iron really well. I have used the minwax paste wax before but it does not keep forever how often do you need to reapply it.
September 14, 20232 yr Probably depends (what doesn't?) on a few factors. On a surface that has wood sliding across it, you may need to reapply every 4-6 months. But on the column of the DP would think once year or longer would be sufficient. When you say the minwax doesn't keep forever, are you referring to the product being stored in the can, or it's life on the cast iron? I've had a can of Johnson's for several years and it's still good, same with the Trewax I used before the Johnson's. But it does get worn off surfaces by use, and you'll have to refresh them periodically.

It was rebranded as Johnson's Natural Paste Wax I got mine at lowes.
September 14, 20232 yr Author The old Johnson's paste wax would work on cast iron for about 6 weeks then start to rust. The wax in the can lasts "forvever"
September 15, 20232 yr The last time I did my table saw top I used Trewax. That was probably 4-6 months ago and it is still slick and looks good and it's been getting regular use. I wonder when we talk about longevity of the wax on our work surfaces if weather conditions might factor in? With a surface like cast iron and a humid day, would we be - in effect - sealing in some moisture that then leads to early "failure"? 4 to 6 months ago would have put me back to late winter when our humidity is generally lower. This Trewax is lasting much longer than the Boeshield (or something like that) that I had been using.
September 15, 20232 yr Author To all, the cosmelemn on the drill press shaft was the cause of the rack not working well. Once I clean it up with Mineral spirits and sanded with 400 to remove flash rust it came out beautiful and working better than ever. I also heavily lubricated the rack with wax and how what a difference!!!. The Jonnson's pate wax is discontinued or rebranded into and this stuff has no silicone it it according to their web site. Waxed everything shiny on the DP and now working better than ever. I think I know why I reported that the wax only lasted for a few weeks I probably go some gunk on the table and then took mineral spirits to it while wet to remove it. Unknowing that mineral spirits is a real good striper for a very thin coat of wax. Rosin paper will cover my Table Saw going forward when finishing. I will leave the wax on the DP and report back how long it lasts before and visible defects. I did date it in magic marker at the bottom to recall when the start date was. Next are the jointer and table saw. On the saw my extension table of formica has seen better days I will create a new one. The WWOGA band saw tune up it was got me started and they reference some spray lubricant/sealer that I have ordered. All thanks for all the comments. I think I am well on the way to a much cleaner looking shop more easily working shop. If you like some other tips and facts and working methods WoodWorkers Guild of America is a great source and fairly inexpensive. I live in Central but work west coast time so I can only work on the shop in the early AM.
