Woodworking trackers

Featured Replies

I recently changed browsers and switched to DuckDuckgo. I was amazed at the trackers on nearly every site. Especially Rockler 104 trackers and Woodcraft 89. I know I"d be even more amazed if I knew how many Google has. Duck Duck identifies and blocks all of them. The Patriot Woodworker showed NO trackers.

I am NOT promoting any web site, but I feel safter knowing I am not on a browser that doesen't tell the world my info.

My wife uses DuckDuckGo on her laptop. It works well for her, too.

The only problem I have found is that some sites will not function as designed due to the blocked trackers. Especially those that are asking for reviews.

how does one find such info?

I've Ben using DuckDuck go for some time on my desktop and tablets. Desktop uses Chrome as browser with "DDG extension; Firefox as browser on the tablet with DuckDuck go extension. Also use DDG via Chrome on my Android phone; just got a new to me laptop; still configuring it but likely will install Firefox as default browser with DDG. Installed DDG on wife's Android phone as well as granddaughters phones and laptops. Don't recall encountering any site issues except using my tablet to access PP for eBay purchases.

The resident computer guy says, "Try Brave".

Simply put, the Brave Browser is 3x faster than Google Chrome. By blocking privacy-invading ads & trackers by default, there's less stuff to load on every single webpage you visit.

Coincidentally I tried Brave about a month ago and I loved it. It's a good solid browser.

Another thing I like is a feature that looks like a flame in the upper right corner. It is in either black or orange. If you click on it, it will delete (or burn:)) all sites you have visited

Been using Ghostery for quite a while now.....right now, it is showing 2 trackers on this site, and is blocking both.

Windows 10..Firefox...with IOrbit  scanning/firewall.   Not real thrilled about MSN Edge...seems more trouble than it is worth...

Hey Steve, can you type the name of the trackers in a reply here? Thanks!

Not sure what the CDN is, I'll look for it and see what's up with that.

The Matomo, only tracks you while you are here, it doesn't follow you. It's part of my analytics that tells me how many people visited in a day, in a week, in a month, in a year and the general geographic location. Our two remaining supporters like to see those stats at the end of each year, because they like to see that we have a good amount of traffic, sure they love us, but bottom line it's the mighty dollar, and they want to make sure their brand is being seen.

So if anybody has the Matomo blocked, for the sake of our analytics counting visits, and keeping our sponsors happy, please consider unblocking Matomo :)

I'll get back on that CDN Steve, it's curious, hmmmm.

@steven newman, can you hang in here with my experiment? Can you tell me if you see that pesky CDN tracker anymore? The Matomo will always be there, but I think I found the CDN google one and eliminated it.

As you all may remember I tried my hand at the Google Ads a couple weeks ago, and I hated the way they looked, always have but I thought I'd give it a try to see if we could generate some funds from their ads.

I pulled the Google ads completely and last night I deleted some code I had to put in the bowels of our software in order for the Google Ads to work. So I am hoping that was the CDN you were seeing Steven. Please let me know if your browser is detecting it anymore?

I wanted to try Brave, but I'd have to update my IOS to do so. Maybe I'll give Chrome and Ghostery a look.

Just checked...both are still blocked by Ghostery..

Thanks Steve, not too concerned about Matomo, we need that one, but the CDN, we need to get rid of that. Thanks

Here is an interesting observation.

I used a popular cookie and tracker scanner, you can copy paste your favorite woodworking website url into the url window and see what the owners of the website are using to track your movements across the world wide web. I am proud to say, we are really clean.

Go here:

Data-driven investigations of tech and how it influences society

And copy paste our url into the url field, and click on scan. Try a few of your favorite sites while you are at it. It's kind of fun. Ya I know, I'm nerding out on you guys. At the same time, it was very eye opening.
