August 3, 20232 yr Popular Post My nephew is getting married in Sept and his brother has suggested that I might make one of these as they live in Colorado and do a lot of hiking/picnicing. Has anyone ever made one and have ideas or experience with their use? There are a few similar models on Amazon and Etsy.

August 3, 20232 yr Clever idea. The only downside I predict is how heavy a table is as a basket. One reason baskets are usually made from wicker or reed or sewn canvas/duck cloth. 4D
August 3, 20232 yr Popular Post That's pretty neat. I wonder about the weight too. Maybe some wheels and a handle like a suitcase. Or backpack style. Edited August 3, 20232 yr by HandyDan
August 3, 20232 yr Hmmmm...You now have the wheels a-turning......Maybe some 1x6 Poplar? Maybe some 1/2" thick Poplar? Hmmm...

August 4, 20232 yr That is cool, but I have to think that for my hikes it would have been impractical. Now, if by hikes he means park the car and walk a hundred yards in to a campsite that is something different... Edited August 4, 20232 yr by Cal

I don't have a lot of contact with him as he's been in Colorado for 15 or so years.
August 4, 20232 yr I had a student who wanted to make a portable desk. He ended up using Spruce as the lightest wood available locally.

I made some chairs and folding end tables for camping from cedar. That worked pretty well, too. (that's the chair that I took to the get-together Ohio pre-COVID at Fred's)
August 12, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Well it got on pause for a day so I could pick up the hardware. Then I had some work done on my bum knee, so I'm taking it easy for a day or two. I think I'll need to trim a bit off the center joint to keep the slat gaps even. Got the parts cut, though
August 14, 20232 yr If you don’t need them for structural reason, could the handles be leather straps?
August 15, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Got the slats and hardware put on today. What a pain. Sort of like a chair, nothing is straight or square but it's got to end up being square. Sorry, I could not get the sap and heartwood to line up right, I had just enough of one board for it. Next to put on handles, final sanding, and some finish.
