May 6, 20233 yr So in my library project I have a closet. It measures approximately 7ft by 31 inches. Due to design of library I think a French door set would work better but I don't see much online and think maybe I may have to design my own to fit the space and theme. Is this a difficult thing to do? I was thinking maybe something similar to like a luan and two by two? I just want plain wood so I can create the door per theme of room.i never made a door so don't know how hard it is. Folding door I hate plus the way they open would hinder access to things I want to put in there.I am open to any cost effective out of box ideas as well! Edited May 6, 20233 yr by Lissa Hall
May 6, 20233 yr Lissa, I know you don't want to spoil the fun... but I need a pic or sketch to visualize the project. I am also confused as I thought from the earlier pic of the library that it was a piece of furniture? Are you putting the furniture item in this closet? What is the other dimension of the closet, is it 7' wide x 31" deep? What is outside the closet that doors might/might not interfere with? What is the wall that I presume frames the front of the closet, is it load bearing, have sheet rock or lath & plaster, opening trim, existing door?
May 6, 20233 yr Just thinking out of the box here Lissa, completely not what you were thinking, but curtains would go with your theme as well. Some beautiful tapestry type of print, that fits your motif. I've often thought that curtains in many cases in place of doors look better, mainly because the print variety is endless as compared to a door.
May 6, 20233 yr Author No furniture no going in closet but a 3d printer is so need access to it and many other hobby items. I just don't like how folding doors work and how they look is all. John I thought about. Curtain idea as well they do have some that would look great. I am just looking at options. There is a curtain up right now. So it is truthfully either going to be a curtain or a French door kinda thing. Unless any other ideas come up. I did see a couple curtains with old Library themes printed on them that I loved. So this is definitely an option! I will post a pic. But it is messy in the at the moment! Edited May 6, 20233 yr by Lissa Hall

May 6, 20233 yr Author Btw the statues were gifts because I like the lore about Pan and old stories of horned gods. I do pretty much learning about any old religions and beliefs. Th e jars are filled with dried herbs for teas and herbal remedies. Edited May 6, 20233 yr by Lissa Hall
May 6, 20233 yr Author What are pocket doors? Nvrmind will look them up..... Are they doors with shelves? Getting mix images of them Edited May 6, 20233 yr by Lissa Hall
May 6, 20233 yr Pocket doors slide into the wall, it will have an opening in the framing and an overhead track that allows them to open completely out of the way. There are some disadvantage to them...one being that you need to build the pocket into the framing.

A barn door (and track) might be an option.
May 6, 20233 yr The French door idea seems doable. The 7' height may require something a little beefer that an 2 x 2. Maybe you posted it at some point but what tool/machines do you have? Just thinking about how to construct the joints and assembly.
May 6, 20233 yr Standard off the rack doors are 6'8" IIRC. If you have a Habitat for Humanity Restore anywhere close by check there. Sometimes you can find 1/2 sets of bi-fold doors that could be re-purposed into "French" doors. Might even find some louvred sets or???? never know what they might have. Your creativity will speak to you when you see it.
May 6, 20233 yr A bit off the wall and waaaay outside the box. How about a French door made of simple frames with tapestry fabric hung/stretched over them? Can get the look of both while minimizing the downsides of either. Well, you are asking for options. And I'm known around here for taking that road less travelled...
May 6, 20233 yr If I read correctly, your opening is 31" wide. I concur with the barn door idea. Looking at your picture, the wall on the right would necessitate a single 32" door sliding to the left. Maybe something like this one...

Drill press, big sander , table saw, scroll saw. Lathe, miter, pretty much covers it I think 🤔
