February 23, 20233 yr I saw a couple of guys cutting down a tree. I had to stop and ask if they were looking to get rid of some of it. They said somebody already claimed it and it wouldn't be good firewood. I told them I was a woodturner and tried to get a couple of pieces when I see people cutting down a tree. They gave me a couple. They said it was cottonwood. Looked like spalted maple to me. It is spalted. What do you all think.
February 23, 20233 yr Can't tell for sure . The only cottonwood I have had the groves of bark were much deeper. As I remember was a bit fuzzy but spalts nicely. https://gardenerdy.com/factors-to-remember-for-cottonwood-tree-identification/ Edited February 23, 20233 yr by Gerald
February 23, 20233 yr I can't tell the species but I don't see any sign of spalting. Edited February 23, 20233 yr by Steve Krumanaker
February 24, 20233 yr That may be a Maple tree that the Ambrosia Beetle got to. They create staining that could be compared to spalting.
