February 16, 20232 yr After much contemplation and research I have embarked on a new shop adventure and I am making a shooting board. In principle this is a very simple tool that has a flat reference surface that a plane rides and holds a work piece perpendicular. The devil of course is in the details. Anyway here is the base all clamped up.
February 17, 20232 yr Author Have to get it out of the clamps at some point. Been adulting for a minute

February 17, 20232 yr Author Shooting board is pretty much done. Designed to be used with a Lie-Nielsen No. 62 low angle jack plane using a non-radiused jointing blade (which really needs to be sharpened when I get a moment). The dado in the first pic is a 5/8” x 1/4” deep and is fitted with a 1/2” thick hardwood insert. This doubles as a stop for planing thin stock. Taller stops like the one on there in this pic as well as other jigs can be attached by simply routing a matching 5/8” dado on the new jig. Useful for making angled jigs for various purposes. I will make up a 45* here shortly and test that out. My little square says this is close enough for practical purposes…
February 18, 20232 yr Nice Static! I know it's too late, but just in case you want to modify anything, here is a couple ideas right here in our own community And the plan

Unwilling to wait for that you gotta do what you gotta do

But the board could be adapted for any plane really, just really happy to see your set up, a wonderful job, and the most important thing is, she's shooting straight and square! Outstanding job my friend!!!!!
February 18, 20232 yr Nicely done. I’ve always been confused about them. Are they used after I cut the board on the miter saw ? Hmmm. 😎 Paul
February 18, 20232 yr Author Well, if you have a Kapex and a good blade, it probably isn’t needed For hand tool stuff it is pretty much a necessity though and they are really useful for fine tuning the final fit on parts.
February 19, 20232 yr That’s probably why I don’t use one. I never worry about the fit. Just add putty. Paul
