I have been curious about this finish that I found on Woodspirit Handcraft's website. It appears to be a food safe "ceramic" coating that penetrates and leaves a natural protected finish. I don't know anything about it, other than what I have read at Woodspirit.

It looks interesting, any feedback greatly appreciated, @kmealy if you know anything about this? Or by reading the label can tell us your opinion on the product?

I just ordered the sample so we will see how it works. With shipping it’s $10.00/ounce.

I wonder if this is the same stuff they put on your car when they apply a “ceramic protective finish” ?

If so you could use it on the boat.

I am not familiar with this.  My usual first place to look trying to filter out all the extravagant claims are the SDSs.  Unfortunately, my chemistry studies concluded before organic chemistry so I don't know much about Alkane, CAS # 68333-81-3.   Most, if not all, things listed on the SDS are the solvent/dilutents, so it's a bit hard to find out what is actually left on the wood once they evaporate.   But according to the warnings, use in a ventilated ignition-free area and wear gloves to avoid skin contact when applying.

There is no legal definition of "Natural" as far as I know.

Thanks folks for the feedback on this "stuff", it's captivating to say the least. I'm always interested in new finishes out of the norm.

I just received the sample bottle. I may try it this weekend.

It says to polish in between coats but doesn’t give a clue as to how. Any ideas ?

Ya, in the small crafts circles such as spoon and bowl carving, and traditional chair making, it just means to rub it in, use steps 3 through 7 as often as you deem necessary to achieve your final sheen. Keep in mind Paul, this is not a cabinet grade finish, it's purely a hand rubbed finish for smaller arts and crafts and small furnishing such as chairs and such. I don't think I need to tell ya, you been around this craft a long time, but in the genre of woodworking I am involved in, which is crafts and chairs and small furnishings, we don't typically paint finishes on, spray or use any commonly used methods that involve the Varnishes and Lacquers and Poly's and such, we'll use hand applied finishes and rub in finishes, in our work we don't want the layered look of finishes, we desire the "in the grain" appearance of rubbed in finishes.

If I am not mistaking, the Hassui finish is along those lines, rubbed in and buffed by hand. I hope this helps ya :)

That was my impression too. I think I have another ice cream scoop blank which this would be perfect for. I also have some large bubinga salt and pepper mill blanks I could try it on. We will see how the drywall guy does today and see if I can apply it tomorrow to something.

Those projects are perfect!

One of my thoughts on this stuff was using it for exterior teak on the boat. I will do a test piece and see how it does with UV first but it could be great for that. I will try it first on something that is not permanently mounted to the boat like the cutting table for the BBQ grill.

I made another ice cream scoop handle today to try out this new finish. First coat is on, pretty much looks like the first coat of any oil finish. I will take this one to gloss just to see how this stuff looks.

Today I put 4 more thin coats on and it’s pretty glossy. It’s very easy to apply with a rag and dries very fast. I was waiting about an hour between coats but I think it was usually dry at about 30 min. All the coats were very light. I might try one more coat and make it a heavy coat to see what happens. So far it’s very easy to get a perfect glossy finish in one day which is great.
