Got some progress made on the sharpening station built in.

Counter top is on, drawer slides are on order, and I have plenty of room for a coffee maker and a box of doughnuts (not shown)

Got the drawers all finished up this morning.

I am thinking I will leave the bottom open for now just to try to figure out what I want to do with that.

Looks good Static, no excuse not have sharp tools now my friend! I like the proportions of your cabinet, very nice.

Nice!

I saw a trick from a woodworker in Denmark where he epoxied a magnet to the inside bottom of the water bath. He said it helped collect the metal dust and made the plastic container easier to clean. I don’t keep water in the bath when not in use so not sure if it’s a worthwhile endeavor

Sweet. What's the working height Michael?

Working height is right at 36” which seems to be where I like to be.  My handtool bench is the same height.

The Tormek actually has a magnet in the water bath from the factory.  It mounts on the outside but is powerful enough to grab metal particles and stick them to the side.  It conveniently acts as a scraper too, so you just pull it off, and scrape all the little metal particles out of the water trough.  It’s pretty well thought out.

Wow, thanks! They sure have improved them since the first models were introduced. I bough one of the originals back in 2000.

No camera angle could get me anywhere close!:(

lol, i need to learn how to use those angles, my joints a mess, even after a clean up by the boss.

Sharpening?  What is this magic you speak of?  I'll admit my memory could use some sharpening but that had been true since, well.... I can't remember when.

As for keeping tools sharp I notice that those that need occasional sharpening are the ones I rarely use now.  I suspect I have some chisels that could be sharper. I've got two jointers. One does get dull I think from just being exposed to air. Rarely use it. The other has these nice square cutters that when dull or chipped/nicked I just rotate the dull or chipped one to another side that hasn't yet been used.  With a CNC to use that can cut whatever joints I can imagine I rarely find a need for a chisel.  Router bits break or might even get a little dull, but if they no longer serve they get replaced with a new one.  Where I taught we used to send out straight flute carbide tipped router bits to be sharpened. We stopped that when the obvious result was a sharp bit that was no longer it's promised diameter. OK maybe on a router table if you took the time to measure from the cutting edge rather than making an assumption about the bit's diameter.  Never good on a CNC as it is hard to mark or keep track of bits that are odd diameters not normally in the tool library of the software I use.

I'll admit I've given the Tormek system a long look. Don't need it and don't really have a place to keep it.   I've got a local sharpener who does saw blades and do use him once every other year or so.

Don't need it

I thought so too, until we got married. Kitchen cutlery edges don't survive more than a few days here. "My" knives are hidden.

Sharpening is this old-time wizardry that involves ritual movements of specific tools over magic stones and other materials

There is great debate about which tools should be used in this ritual and which specific magic stones grant the best boons.

Many sects are involved in this practice and certain rituals have fallen by the wayside only to be resurrected by new generations.

Ex took all the good kitchen knives that I didn't know we had.   I've tried to sharpen plastic knives but burnt plastic I feel is somehow worse than burnt food.  ;)

I was a member of the sharpening cult when I was young and innocent.  I know there is a box or drawer some place in my house with diamond coated stones, a sheet of float glass with tape residue on it, and a book or two about sharpening tools in it.

On a related note: I still have a scar on my right thumb from an expensive router bit that was so sharp it cut me before I even had it out of the blister pack it came in.  That bit never got used as we established that it was haunted by the ghost of a vengeful mine worker who died mining the carbide raw material used to make it.  It remains in an unmarked and "stuck" drawer of the college fab lab back room.  I retired as the last survivor who knew of it and where it is. Pray the young educators never try to pry open that drawer! :(
