November 14, 20223 yr Popular Post Still had some leftovers...hauled the Ash 1 x 6 to the shop.. Cut in half, lengthwise...figured I could book match the 2 into a panel....needed to joint the edges a bit..first.. As I didn't want any gaps.. Like this....makes it hard to glue up.... Let this sit a few days.... Floor's a mess. panel is out of the clamps...cleaned up, flattened...edges were made parallel....then found the center, and made the panel into 2 side panels.. There was a Problem...as things had to be cut at an angle.... And then some feet had to be cut out...there are 2 blanks sitting here, BTW Had to match them up...some of the edges were a bit ..rough We have ways.. Things were short enough, that the Junior Jack could act as a Jointer...then leave this mess in the vise and clamps a few days.. And let them get used to the shop.....seems they wanted to bow a wee bit....fixed that problem... That will catch things up until this morning..stay tuned...
November 14, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Ok..Second plank to the shop..was a 1 x 6 Maple....saved the spalted part for other projects, but.. Needed these 2 sections. Again, looking for a book-match...and again, needed to joint some edges...once the taper part was removed. Then a glue up could happen.. Can let this sit a day or 3... Didn't like the squared off top so... Kind of eye-balled the top one over on the bandsaw....then traced around for the second side's top...fun part was trying to get this to look halfway decent.. The "Front" will be the taller part. Thinking it might be a bit hard to carry around....so... Dropped the drill press down into "Granny Gear" 4 holes to get things close...then come back and clean up with the bit into the centers between the holes...was still a bit..rough....we have ways.. Drill press is now a drum sander...drum is almost the same size as that Forstner bit.. When the shelf comes out of the clamps, it will need a dado to sit in....laid one out, needed a way to match this dado to both of the sides... Just transfer the marks at the end of the dado to the other side panel... Then connect the dots... Will need to "excavate" the dados to match the shelf.....not sure just how, yet....whether to make it a simple dado, or a sliding dovetail? Stay tuned...

November 15, 20223 yr Popular Post I'll second the vote for sliding dovetails. I'll throw in bonus points if you taper the slot just a bit.
November 15, 20223 yr Popular Post Nice Project for November. Glad you're feeling better and back in the dungeon.
November 15, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Be careful what you ask for... Panel for the bottom shelf is out of the clamps... had a blob of dried glue try to cut a fingertip...we have ways..to flatten things out.. I then cut a second shelf to this size. . Both needed to be cut at an angle...first I needed to FIND that angle.. Hmm, too small..we have others.. Angle is 10 degrees...set the mitre gauge to that setting...cut the main shelf first...then the upper shelf to match... Then set up the router table... First try was a tad too fat..second pass to correct... Switched to a hand-held router to mill the sockets...fun part was getting the fence set up... Trying to keep things from moving around...First side wasn't too hateful... But, what worked for this side...suddenly no longer worked when the other socket was being milled....decided to stop with a dry fit for the night... While I figure out how to mill the sockets for the top shelf....and NOT screw things up.... That will do, for Tuesday Night Fights, Stay tuned..
November 16, 20223 yr Popular Post If that shelf is just for slippers your other shoes are going to get jealous!
November 20, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Ok...update time....I thought that I had the upper shelf the correct size....wrong, Yet, I tried to dry fit things together, anyway.....hammered together, looked like..crap had to hammer it back apart....split one side in the process. Cut a NEW upper shelf...and changed to dovetail slot to a dado.....this time the dry fit seemed to work a lot better....despite losing a chip-out from routing the dado....pre-existing split. Grrrr. Glue and clamps, let sit overnight.. and.. ..next day, off came the clamps..any and all gaps were filled up. Shelves were sanded and planed flush to the sides. everything was sanded to 220 grit.. Even the glue joint to fix the split looks good. Added a strip across the back of the bottom shelf... C clamp is holding the chip-out while the glue dries..Front view? May run a round-over bit around a bit, later today....then brush on/wipe off.. And see how things look.... Stay tuned
November 20, 20223 yr Popular Post Things will happen and fixes will occur. Good catch on a resolution

November 22, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Project Posting...IF anyone wants to see it.. A view from the front.. A view from the back.. A view from the side... Looking down from the top, and.. Filling up with slippers...I think that will do the trick... Thanks for looking in!
