Hi, John if you think this needs to be relocated, please do so. The wife of my best friend, sent me (well actually me Missus) a picture of a spice rack that rolls into the space between the fridge and wall. Was wondering if I could make one for her. I told her I thought it would be too top heavy, and would get very dusty there. Then I was wondering (and I’m gonna TRY to describe my idea), If I built a box, say 3 feet by 3 feet by 6 inches, and the 6 inches was to fit in the space between the fridge and wall, could I use a pair of drawer slides for it to slide out from the fridge and then back in? The slides would be mounted on the wall side of the box, top and bottom. I was wondering if it might sway too much, when fully pulled out. I was gonna put a back on the box, and doors on the front to keep the dust out. Pull it out from the space, open the doors, grab your spices, close everything up and slide it back in. Any thoughts on better hardware, or design, I’m more than happy to consider/use

Yes, but I’ma thinking the spices are gonna get pretty dusty without some covering, with the rack being stored there.

Either enclosed or railed shelves. Nothing worse than trying to fish out those little bottles when they fall off of a shelf.

I like the idea of drawer slides. I think it will provide more stability than wheels as shown in the link from Smitty.

Instead of doors to keep the dust out some kind of louver like a roll top desk might work better

I've not done that, but seen it done and think it would work.  Good metal slides shouldn't have that much flex in them.  If you are worried, you could do slides on both top and bottom.

I used a unit like this from Rev-a-shelf in a 9" wide tray divider cabinet.   The full extension slides at the bottom are pretty rugged and screw to the base of the cabinet.   As long as the cabinet is installed securely, there's no issue with stability.  The slides release so the entire unit can be removed for cleaning, etc.

Artie,

In 2012, I built all new cabinets for the house.  Next to the microwave I had a space just big enough for a small spice rack.  Here it is.  22A41A7E-5699-428D-BFE2-5456FA33CE5D.jpegEB9FC410-399D-46D8-85C2-1F22FD62187A.jpeg

I like that!

Sorry coming in late on this one Artie. I have done the side mount full extensions before and they work fine. Just buy very heavy duty slides and you won’t have any issues.

I still gotta go visit in person, and see if I think it’s feasible, but it seems like it would be a fun project.

if this is next to the fridge i would be more concerned about it messing with the air circulation and cooling around the unit.

Spice racks of any design are easy to make. Weight isn’t an issue. I’ve put them everywhere in kitchens from next to stoves to refrigerators.

some ideas from a kitchen i did years ago.

My plan was to leave the bottom 3 feet empty, just for this reason.

Artie I can't express my thoughts on any subject in just a word of two..

My wife needed more areas to hide things that set out on the counter tops. She said a few hundred times can you come up with ways to hide things.

The kitchen area already has 60 drawers and doors to hide things which was about  double the amount we had at the last house. 131912255_20221111_095201outofthewayspicerack.jpg.b2a6178885299815338e5214627bf803.jpg

First we cleaned out 4 drawers by building a wall spice rack... Very simple and up out of the way and high enough the bottles stays sort of clean. Its 25 inches wide and 46 inches tall. It seems like every thing I build has something to do with baltic birch sizes.

We looked at those little slide out thingies and she said they looked like they were for bragging rights only and not practical for her house...she is the cook so this her territory so I keep most of my thought to my self only part of the time..

This next picture is a very small area that the builders were stumped for what to do so they just stopped the cabinets and wasted space we thought. Where I connected to the existing cabinet I only used about 4 inches wider than the front of the cabinets already were but angling them out to match the angling hall way I ended up with 13"

1343272963_20221111_100219kitchenextrastorages.jpg.10547cbedbc1eadb91d14d3114b9f70b.jpgdeep at the wall.  These were just regular sets of cabinets and stopped before they took up all the room at the end. 5985220_outofthewaypantry.jpg.ef468a50a9581fde7bf257fd46d00286.jpg

This area is slightly angling going in to the living area. The cabinets are oak and all I had at the time was ash so with a little color the wood ended up fake oak .

I had built her some knife holders that set on the counters then when we moved here she said don't get mad buy I want you to build something else for the knives for this is just something else that is always in the way on the counter.

My motor home gave me the thoughts to use the backs of the cabinet doors for knife racks. They used to backs for road maps.

The fronts of some of the doors are also used for conviences and it does not effect the doors of working properly.

The little towel racks on the two or three of the lower doors is the last thing we did and now the towels dry faster. Then when we bought the double oven it wouldn't fit right because of the size so I thought I needed to angle it to match the other side of the hall way and now it looks like this is how the builders had planned every thing to start with.

I don't know why I think a book size of words is necessary so sorry for that!!

A book size of words, and clear, big, pictures! My friend’s wife saw a picture of a spice cart that rolled into the space between the fridge and the wall. She liked the idea and wanted me to build her one, if I could, and wanted to. I pointed out that I didn’t think a spice rack that was that narrow, and rolled, was gonna be very stable. Also without a front, back, or any doors, that was a very dusty location, not to mention maybe interfering with the refrigerators cooling airflow. I have not yet been to their house to check out the space, dimensions, and other possibilities. From what she told me she really liked the idea of using that dead space. This got me to wondering about a spice rack on drawer slides, that could slide out. Have a back on it, and door/s. Keep the spices up higher, dust gets on the cabinet, not the spices, and no interference with the fridges airflow. I was not sure if drawer slides would work as wall mount slides. I think it would be a fun project, but I’m not sure how effective it would be.

Artie after I had wife read what I typed yesterday she said there are two main reasons I like the rack you built better than anything else .. Number one was when she needs a little spice or seasonings she says most of the time her hands are greasy covered with butter or something sticky or what ever and they never seem clean enough to pull or slide out anything and this rack is built so nothing is behind something else hid like use to when all the things were in those four drawers I would waste more time just trying to locate something. I can stand up straight and see any and all the bottles and cans without taking any extra time I hardly ever have to waste.

This is not things a man would consider when trying to accommodate wifeeee.
