Maple decorative platter, a work in progress.

Lew with this type equipment you come back as Steve said for a light pass and it looks like you sanded all that black off. It does seem like double the work when you do it but in the long run is a time saver.

Outstanding!  Do you plan to radius the cut out portions?

Not sure just exactly what you mean but if you're talking about the edge of the "spline", yes, but only slightly. Most of the effects will be with shading.

Very cool. Can’t wait to see it done.

The piercing is completed, at least the cutting out part. There is still a bit of knife work and filing to do.

The very top piercing is shaped a little differently. It's my intention to terminate the pattern with a herringbone pattern around the top. I want the weave to die into that.

This is the flip side and I've started to draw in the pattern here. The triangle cut outs give me landmarks to fill in the pattern so it matches the other side. Still, at first there is a lot of erasing and scratching of polar opposites if you know what I mean.

I have started the shading on what will be the underside. Right now, I'm thinking the whole thing will need to be darker overall. This wood is so light so I'll probably do a two or three layers on the shading to get it where I want it. The herringbone pattern is also drawn on the rim. A little hard to make out because the layout grid is still in place. The grid won't get erased until after the pattern is burned in.

Looks nice Steve.  LI like it.

Moving along with my platter. At this point the main pattern on the underside is pretty much done.

I'm pretty happy with it. The center/foot area will get a motif and signature. The area immediately between the foot and the pattern will get stippled.

I've have drawn in the herringbone pattern around the rim and started to shade that as well.

I can't honestly say I'm pleased with the rim shading to this point. I like the pattern but the wood is just not taking the shading the way I'd like. I will likely try to sand this back and go with another technique

Steve that is way beyond very cool.

Love it!  You do have an eye for what how much shading it needs.

Will the inside look the same as the outside.

Rusty, the main pattern will be nearly identical as the triangle cutouts dictate what I want and have to do. It's my intention to do a herringbone pattern for the rim on the inside as well. The center motifs front to back will be different. On the bottom I intend to do a variation of the six point star we all learned in grade school art class. This platter is intended to be a gift and that area will also have the recipients name and my signature.

On the front side it's my intention to do one of my favorite Zentangle patterns, "phicops in a circle".

The bottom is done except for the center area. I won't finish that until the topside is done so as not to damage it.

I have to say the herringbone pattern turned out better than I'd hoped for and I'm happy with it. I'd also like to mention, the circumference on a 12" platter is just over 37.5". I appreciate that now.
