I’m not sure what to think about this

I identify as a young and, handsome journeyman cabinet maker. Don't make it so, though. :OldManSmiley:

"Nice wood" (*) does not elicit emotions.  People run on emotions, hence any social connection seeks an emotional context to attract attention (because attention makes money).  A current fad is some form of gender aspect / interpretation to every situation.  If it bleeds it leads.  Public communications will always favor the current fad over the nominal topic.  If you translate the evening news into a series of collective actions to pay the mortgage, you understand why talking heads say things.

Look up "tulip mania 1637" to see how much sense this all makes [hint:  as in "none"].  But, again, we don't run on good sense, we run on emotions.  "Woodworkers helping each other" doesn't have the same cache as "Patriot Woodworker".   [Insight is usually correct when you feel a little sting]

Just more of the in your face, look at me, mindset.

I've got this plan. Buy up all of the nickel and nickel production. Corner the market.

It's a confusing time for youngsters.  Let's see, you can be A, B, Not{A,B}, Both {A,B}, A but identify as B, B but identify as A,  used to be A but are now B, used to be B but are now A, A or B but want to be known as they/their, A but dress like B, B but dress like A, etc.  Saw some of this in the theater cast.

I agree and feel that a some of these are identifying as someone else because they think it will put them in the cool LGBTQ group.

it used to be that the most annoying type was the "Vegan", the first thing they would tell you was "I'm a vegan!"

um, ok.  we're not going to lunch, so i don't see how that is relevant at the moment.

but now, it's the alphabet soup group.

i'm happily married, I really don't care or want to know about your private life, can we please discuss something else, anything else?

and if you pick religion as the topic, i'm pretty sure you won't like what i have to say about your alphabet soup problem.

I wondered about this.  It seems if you are in the LGBTQ+I or whatever, that is your "identity."   But if I pick one other thing about you -- race, religion, age, ethnicity, national origin, education level, diet, political leanings, occupation, etc., and make that your "identity", then I am bigoted or racist.

Pathetic that such a small group gets so much attention , the poor little dears. Will not go into reasons but I try to avoid it. Get the attention you need based on what you do or can do and leave the other stuff at home.

I fear the confusion is more likely among the oldsters.  The youngsters understand all the new metrics, the new languages, nuances.  They live in a different universe than their predecessors.  BTW, the process isn't new:  Og never understood what Oggie what talking about.  My granddaughter announced, "my doll is non-binary".  She's 7.  I'm ancient and getting more so!  They will make mistakes, but in their own context.  The best we can hope for is their tolerance.

It's only natural. Lately, post-Covid, as the dating / mating scene shuffles the available & the 'looking', I've noticed that a morning shave and a nice shirt is well-received  . . .  and the 40's gal who called me "sir", well, maybe she was a little too young for me. :)

Growing up, if you had a handicap, it was your cross to bear. Nowadays,  accommodation is the buzzword.

But instead they throw it in your face in dress, manner, and affectation of accent. Changing the way you speak to highlight your differentness.

My reference to the Hunt Brothers ties to Tulip Mania. How far will we go before the rubber band snaps. Now the fight is over man calling themselves women, competing in high school and collegiate sports. Hey mom, look at me! I'm winning!

As this thread teeters dangerously close to the political, I leave you with this:

This is actually an interesting social / cultural commentary.

A certain type of person who’s entire identity is wrapped up in their gender/sexuality/expression/feelings/etc… has been told forever that everyone not like them, is some kind of “phobic”.  This leads them to eschew the traditional pathways that could lead to enlightenment in certain areas of life and try to establish alternative pathways that are friendly to their mindset.

The reality is that most people involved in those same traditional pathways couldn’t give a rat’s arse about their identity.

Oh you identify as a left-handed lesbian midget albino elephant?  Great, this is how you run a board through a joiner without cutting your fingers off.

Tables should be proportional. And strong enough to sit on. Because someone will. Account for someone leaning back in that chair. Beds should match the size of the mattress. Avoid end grain to end grain joinery

there are thousands of such rules. You want to violate them?  Good luck. Just as there are rules built in for life.

Not sure I can definitively state WHO/WHAT I am, using modern metrics. Doesn’t really matter cause I’m happy most of the time. I fear the youth of today is destroying the world, and I have that in common with the elders of the last 200 years. Maybe the more things change the more they stay the same? Kinda like the old muscle cars, I’m not really a Chevy, Ford, AMC, Dodge, Plymouth, etc guy, but I LOVE looking at all of them at the car shows. (I prefer to put things in car terms, I understand cars)

I frequently remind my grandson about real people vs. the phonies (youtube, movies, entertainers, etc.)

This was posted in my classroom for many years.

We had a discussion this morning and one person said that a school district was having a very difficult time hiring substitute teachers.  Apparently, the school lets every student "identify" what they want to be.  A number of students "identify" as cats and dogs and disrupt the classroom with barks, growls, and purrs.  SMH.  Just to do some fact checking, I searched on this and there are reports of this in Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, and then I quit looking when I read that, no, the schools are not providing litter boxes in the unisex bathrooms.
