Easter Eggs in Color

I have been making a few eggs for Easter since seeing the video in Lew's weekly post.  I decided to do mine in colors.  Started out trying to make some measurements and a template.  Wasn't working out and I figured what the heck, it's just an egg so went and free handed them.  Did a little texturing, added some burn lines and got out the Amsterdam ink and colored them.  Put on a coat of shellac to finish them up.   Here are some of the results.  Made a couple bowls for display and figured some grass would help.  The plastic grass is wild and untamed.  I didn't do it for the picture but trimmed the excess with scissors later.

Those are really NICE, Dan! Is the acrylic ink similar to "India Ink"?

I would imagine so Lew.  Most inks today I believe are water based.  The calligraphers use it.  I use the Amsterdam brand because I was able to get it locally.  There are other brands available that would work as well.   I like them for their color varieties and ease of use.  They color the wood similar to a stain but are more controllable.  It will bleed but is easily controlled with the burn lines.  The colors build nicely without getting darker like the markers and other color pens I have tried to use.  The markers and other pens lose the ink from their felt tips and I've had to pause while the replenish.  I apply the ink with a small brush and can keep dipping it for more as needed.  The bottles are priced around $4.00 a bottle and can be purchased in sets or individually.  I've had bottles for years that are still good.  The bulb dropper in the lid is rubber and is also the gasket so the jars seal very well.  All I can say is buy one and try it you may be as pleasantly surprised as I was.

Thanks for the information. I haven’t used much coloring for turnings. I do use black India ink to ebonite maple finials.

Like the colors and striping. Turning eggs may be addicting.

Very nice Dan, I like the coloring on them.
