I think I posted pictures of this piece of wood earlier but a quick search didn't find that post. I had started to turn this into a platter but it was just too iffy for my taste. That, and I found a neat inclusion that I wanted to save so I took it off the lathe and decide to make a tray or a platter. To do that, I needed to do a resin pour, something I'm not the best at. Did some research and decided on a product called "liquid diamonds" and finally this morning I worked up the nerve to try the pour.

Not the best picture because of the glare from the lights and the colors don't show up real well. I dyed the "creek bed" with aniline dye in red, blue, and green. It shows up well but not in pictures. The resin I used is supposed to be glass clear and not have bubbles, so far I'm pleased with what it's doing.

I had this piece of wood mounted on a faceplate and of course that meant screw holes. I didn't want obvious screw holes showing so I carved out a couple areas of "erosion" on either side to hide the screw holes hoping to make it at least a little natural looking.

This picture shows what inspired me to attempt this. I have seen a lot of crotch pieces but I've never seen one that had limb inclusion in it. I just felt that had to be preserved and highlighted if possible. Honestly, I'm not sure how to proceed after this cures. I may put it back on the lathe to dress the edges or I may use a circle jig and router. I do know, I really, really, hope it goes well from here.

Oh, Wow! that is going to be beautiful!!

Do you thing it might be necessary to put a clamp around the perimeter to hold it together when re-turning it?

If I do return it at all it will only be to dress the edge. After the resin hardens I don't believe it could fly apart if it had too.

Looks like a great project . I have been thinking of trying this same product. Turning would probably be easiest but then how to mount it. Maybe hand planes.

You did the research well.  Looks crystal clear.  Beautiful piece.

That looks great Steve, you definitely did your homework.

That is awesome Steve. It's above my pay grade for the next step but I'm confident you'll take it to the next level. Just a gorgeous piece of wood.
