December 30, 20214 yr Popular Post Continuing to clean up the crotch collection I have in the yard. This is some live oak tgat has been in the yard n maybe two years and am surprised at how good it still was but also hard just the same. Much thicker than normal but I am calling this an art piece. Probably try Mahoney’s walnut oil on it and yes there is yet more of it.
December 30, 20214 yr Popular Post Man-O Man, that's really pretty, Gerald. An art piece, for sure. But then, all your turnings are art pieces!
December 30, 20214 yr Saw this yesterday on my phone. Now on the "big screen" I can see the details. Even more impressive!! I'd be interested in knowing about how you did the hollowing. The dish part was probably done on the lathe but how did you do the inner rim where the concave portion intersects with the top? A closer inspection shows it is not symmetrical.

One branch on the crotch was smaller so that left a lower side to the blank. The side toward the camera is lower and therefore the cut is not as deep. This makes it look elliptical but it is just that about one inch of the hollowing is on one side only. Also this makes the whole thing look to have waves in the edge but there are no waves just different heights to the rim with the grain under bark looks that way. By the way if anyone gets some Live Oak this beautiful erratic grain waves make it not worthwhile to save the bark, but to peal it and preserve this grain which is much like swirls in fingerprints.
