December 23, 20214 yr Popular Post ARC? Aromatic Red Cedar. Had a stash to either use up...or burn.. Thought MAYBE a small box.....something like... This...ends were too long...didn't quite match up with the 8" long sides...so.. We have ways... Thinking 4" will be a better size...once things were cross cut for length, time to mark a few lines.. Stanley No. 65 set to the thickness of the boards...corners will be finger joints.... A 3/16" Sash chisel to set the spacings...because that will be the chisel I'll use to do the chopping with...after a bit of saw work.. Slab of Ash to try and protect the top of the bench... Then use these as a pattern, to mark out the matching fingers.... In Therory....the fit gets better as I work around the corners...#2? So that by the time I get to #3 corner.... I'm starting to get the hang of this finger joint stuff...one more to do... The saw is sitting there, in the tool well. Also is the scrap pile, was a "stick" of 1/4" Poplar...Back to the Mitre saw. Plan is to cut 2 roughly for length. 1 was wide enough, but place 2 together, they were too wide. Well I can lay both on top of the box, mark how much needs ripped from each, to keep the center line even...bandsaw did it's usual BAD attempt at a straight line. No biggie, will need to trim for final width, after a glue-up, anyway. They did had an almost "Factory" edge,,,just had to refine it a bit.. Choose the size plane to match the size of the job. Edges were jointed, so that when glue is applied, there isn't any gaps... Just 2 clamps? Well, the bench vise is both a 3rd hand, and a caul..will let this sit a day...while I figure out some sort of lid. This glue-up will be the bottom of the box. That will do for today..Stay tuned..
December 23, 20214 yr Popular Post Having that clean shop floor stress you out a little? So whatcha' going to do with this little hybrid box?
December 23, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Remains to be seen...debate is now on what sort of lid to make..and whether it will be more Cedar, or some thin Ash.....Either would involve a glue up. Stay tuned

December 23, 20214 yr saw a post on Freecycle, someone looking for some free scrap wood. bingo, i'm your guy, have a pile of scraps. contact her, make the offer, and then.....no show. so I ask? coming? well.....she's not sure she has enough gas to get here and get home......no worries, wood isn't going anywhere. how can you run out of gas???!!!
December 24, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Poplar panel is out of the clamps...trimmed for length.. And, after a trim for width, and the saw marks removed... This was due to that I needed one good edge, before the cross cut was done...then a rip cut for width....then a flattening.. Yes, there are 2 pieces in that panel...tired to match up the grain..came close? Set this aside, for now.. Laid out for some blanks for a lid...and cros cut those to length.. Laid these 2 out on top of the box...figured out I could do a finger lift...but one of the blanks will be too wide.. Yep, about that much...didn't like how the bandsaw was doing rip cuts...so.. On the outside of the tool cabinet hang 4 saws, this one hasn't been used in a while...a Disston 20", 10 ppi, D8 Panel saw. Made before the hyphen was added...pre-1928. and away we go... Went down as far as I could saw, WITHOUT hitting the vise...flip the board over and saw from the other direction.. Then wipe the saw down, and hang it back up...saw marks on the edge needed planed.. For a better glue joint...moosh some glue around...cauls and clamps.. Cauls to keep things flat until the glue dries...set this aside...need some elbow room, now... Time to glue these 5 parts together....need me big mallet, too...and more cauls... There is a spacer bar on the top of the inside...so the long sides don't bow in... Bottom is glued in place, will come back later with a few brass nails to dress it up a bit.. Ok, that was a bit more fun than my old knee wanted...Pizza for lunch!....let these 2 glue-ups sit a day or two...no rush Stay tuned, have a Happy Holiday!
December 24, 20214 yr Popular Post Is it possible to ask about getting Christmas as a day off???? Not sure about the rest of the gang but I'm exhausted!!

December 29, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Lets see, how about an up-date? Since the last work sessions...have removed a few clamps. And these are just from the box...Sides were planed and sanded..square and smooth...bottom needed to be flat.. We have ways...grain going 4 directions at once? Then work on the rim.. Rounds were all rounded over, BTW. Set this aside, and work on the lid a bit.. Clean up the glue lines on both faces...then did a little bandsaw work.. And locate some hardware... Top holes in these hinges are too high up. Decided to drill a better location a bit lower down.. Also, despite those hinges and the latch being supplied with brass nails...decided screws will work better. So, I needed 2 drills set up, one for drilling the larger holes in Brass, the other to drill pilot holes for the screws...That "HUGE" screw? Is a 1-5/8" No. 6 Dry wall screw... The Red 7 Blue Stanley Handyman drill for the brass. The G-P No. 329 for the pilot holes Have since added one coat of clear gloss poly.. Back side...will need a coat or two more... Then I'll see about a lift-out tray...Not really decided on the finger lifts...a bit too much? Stay tuned...
December 29, 20214 yr Author Popular Post A LONG time ago, during a road trip through the Smokey Mountains....seemed like every souvenir shop had a shelf filled with small cedar boxes...most with way too much varnish, AND a branded in logo of some sort. This may turn out to be like one of those....without the branding of a logo. I might even have a small, brass padlock to use with it. Need to cobble a lift out tray for it, next... Stay tuned

December 31, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Ok...got to looking at that "Dolly Parton" lid....hmmm, we can do better..so, bandsaw to rough out something else. Edges were a bit rough, we have ways.. So, where the #101 plane couldn't reach...the chisel could...cuts Red Cedar like butter..the little plane did round over a few of the "new" edges, though Also, along the bottom edges of the box.. Drilled a pilot hole through the cedar (preventing any splits) and just barely into the Poplar bottom..three nails per side. So, next task was to work on a tray...Mitre Box helped cut a few pieces for the tray, a bottom, and a blank for a handle to lift the tray out.. There was a problem...the 4 sides were not the same height...and one edge was rough...we have ways.. Gang all 4 up, smooth edges down, clamp in the vise, and level the playing field....making curlies... Wanted to start on finger joints..got about this far with the bandsaw... When the 1/4" x 80" blade ..broke...with a LOUD BANG! Box was already sanded and wiped down, gave it a second coat of poly gloss.. So...figured it was just about quitting time. Stay tuned..
January 2, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Update on the tray....tried one more time with the No.68 Dovetail saw....wasn't working...then, cut on the wrong side on the lines...had to cobble a new end piece...from scratch...enough was enough! Dug around on the shop's shelves....found it! Had to clean it up a bit ( ok, a LOT..air hose was needed..) . Cost me a whopping $10 at a yard sale a few years back (yep, was even laying IN the grass in the yard) found some new blades at Menard's... Plugged it in, and gave it a try out... The longer piece was already done...shorty was done on the scrollsaw...may have left too much line...needed a small hammer to assemble...1 done, only 3 more to do. Will see how things go Sunday...stay tuned..
January 2, 20224 yr Popular Post Cleaned up nice plus you can sit down to that one. My kind of tool for now at least.
January 6, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Used the scrollsaw again, today. got the other 3 corners done.. Then checked on the blank for the handle.... Has a bad spot there on the right end...laid out a few cuts, to "cure" it.. A scrollsaw is NOT made to cut straight lines time to cut more fingers... And cut matching mortises..dry fit? then work on the other end....day wasn't going all that great, even the shop stool wanted to get in a fight with my feet....get fed up....went and got some glue and a few clamps.. And call it a day...let this mess sit a day..or 2....then see about gluing the bottom of the tray to this ....thing. Decided that was enough fun for today...closed up the shop, and headed back upstairs.. Stay tuned...
