December 1, 20214 yr Popular Post New here. Long time occasional lurker, felt it was time to show my face...sort of. I recently bought this old planer and hauled it home. Serial number 9-9741 which I think makes it a 1959 model, although I see no sign of tail fins. Seriously though, I have a bar that goes across the top of this planer for mounting sharpening tools. Looking around I see mention of a jointer and a grinder. Watched a video where a fella was using the grinder which brings me to my question. He had a way of locking the knives in position for grinding. My planer does not have this. Is it something that can be added on OR is it possible this planer was not meant to be used with the grinder? Looking for some info if anyone knows. Hope the picture works.
December 1, 20214 yr Popular Post Welcome to the forum, Dave. That's a great old machine. Hopefully someone here has some experience with that behemoth and, you can get a lot of use from it.
December 2, 20214 yr Popular Post Welcome Dave to The Patriot Woodworker from a neighbor just to the South. Happy you decided to"drop your cover" and join right in. Please take a moment if you will and drop by the Introduce Yourself Forum and tell us a little bit about yourself. Beautiful piece of old 'arn you got there. Great rescue. Looking forward to seeing you bring it back to life and working hard again. I'm no help what-so-ever answering your questions having never owned any PM equipment. Hopefully our resident old 'arn expert @Larry Buskirk will come along with some answers, suggestions and ideas. BTW, new guys always bring donuts for the group. Your day is tomorrow. Can't go wrong with a chocolate covered glazed.
December 2, 20214 yr Author Popular Post How weird is that? I went into a Basking Robbins/Dunkin Donuts tonight and the owner gave me a free bag of chocolate donut holes. They are here if you want them. For me it is all about the ice cream! Thanks for the welcome...I will stop by that other forum soon.

They are here if you want them. See...you're meant to be here. Love to share them with you but I get nervous this time a year anywhere lake effect snow is lurking. Although if you happen to be headed to Indy Saturday for the B10 playoff game, I can meet you there. Saw tickets on CL today at $250/ea...best to bring your pressurized suit with oxygen for the seats though.
December 2, 20214 yr Popular Post That planer will certainly hold the shop down in a high wind situation. Welcome to the forum....I guess, the Buckeye state doesn't look fondly on that state up north...especially this year. But I don't follow football so all's good as far as I'm concerned.
December 2, 20214 yr Popular Post Welcome to The Patriot Woodworker Dave. Not sure if you've got a manual so found this 1965 dated manual. http://www.vintagemachinery.org/pubs/detail.aspx?id=1294 It shows the Knife Grinding and Jointing Attachment which is listed as optional.

Wonder where you might find that? Ebay, maybe? Are there other sites specializing in old machinery parts?

Are there other sites specializing in old machinery parts? eBay!, Craigslist, OWWM, possibly PowerMatic still has parts available. Since the machine has the optional mounting bar, check with the previous owner. They may have it without knowing it.
December 2, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Appreciate the manual links! I have looked thru it. I still find a lack of reference to the sharpening attachment on the direct drive planer. Hope I did not miss it. The manual shows the belt driven unit and specifically the knife lock with indexing holes to lock each knife in the correct position for grinding, but only on the belt driven unit. Google found me one poor picture of a direct drive unit with the sharpening bar on it. Mine has the mounts for the unit. It did not come with the knife sharpening bar so the former owner had no idea. I happened to find that later. I feel pretty sure that I am missing something here with the direct drive and the grinding option. Wish I could find someone with a direct drive unit and the option installed. I attached a picture of the belt driven model from the model. It shows the handle that moves the pin in and out to index the knives.
December 2, 20214 yr Popular Post Just a thought. You might pose your questions to the folks over on https://www.lumberjocks.com/. They have a huge audience. Hopefully, someone over there knows something.
December 2, 20214 yr Popular Post What you have then is the model 160-D. I sent a message to the only person I know that has one, waiting for a reply. Also asked if he has the 160-D manual. His didn't have the attachment in the photos he posted, but he might know if the attachment fits the direct drive model.

December 2, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Found this in a google search. PM 160-D with the sharpener on the top. I have seen nothing in a manual or brochure that says the sharpening attachment only fits the belt driven model. Sooo....keeping the faith.

I'm sure he'll find us here to be, without a doubt, the best place on the web to hang out. If Larry is successful, then it's confirmed. Even if Larry isn't able to get the info, we all can still enjoy Dave's chocolate do-nut holes.
December 2, 20214 yr Popular Post Dave, I’m a Hoosier that is clueless about the planer but I’ll freely welcome you aboard. If Buskirk can’t find the answer then nobody can. Don’t get a big head LB.
