November 21, 20214 yr Popular Post When we first moved into this house the garage was going to be a temporary shop location but the longer we live here the more obvious it becomes that this is going to be my shop. I put together a very quick and easy lumber rack but it is not going to cut it on a long term basis. So I decided to play hooky today on the media room and begin the process of building a proper lumber rack. I have a lot of 1 3/4” tubing left over from building the car port so I thought using it up would be a good plan. Not sure if it will work out but I’m going to give it a try. If it doesn’t work out I can still use the verticals and make some of the usual wooden shelf brackets. The tubing is an odd size OD but I can use the shaper origin to make the holes any size I want and the test piece worked well. The hole is snug enough to require a light tapping to seat them. I’ll use some epoxy on the final install. I was going to buy some of the HD kiln dried 2X4’s but it turned out they were more that just using some 4/4 poplar that I had so I am laminating them up to be about 1 1/2” X 4”. Hopefully this will all work. Paul

Let's see, minimal rain, no snow, sleet, seldom hail, tornados in Las Vegas..."we don't need no stinking garage" You've got your priorities so a shop it is. Thanks Paul. Always a treat to see what's coming out of "your shop."
November 22, 20214 yr Popular Post Here's my redneck version. As I was building out the walls in the tin can, I drilled holes in some of the studs at a 5° angle to accept 3/4" EMT. Ain't too purty but, it serves the purpose. Edited November 22, 20214 yr by Gene Howe

Simple and everything conveniently filed under "W" for wood. Although, is that a pencil I see in the back? That could be confusing.

The rest is under a couple sheets of corrugated roofing tin under the awning on the side of the shop. Most of that is construction grade fir, though. A lot of the 2X8s became shop shelving.

December 18, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Decided to get the lumber rack up this weekend so today was spent cutting the steel tubing and then gluing them in with epoxy. Tomorrow I will clear out that part of the shop and get them on the wall. Hopefully. Paul

December 19, 20214 yr Author Popular Post No it’s thick wall 1 3/4” tubing. I had it laying around since we built the car port canopy a few years ago. It’s pretty stiff stuff. Paul

Paul Thanks Paul...makes sense. Picture is deceiving at least to my eyes. Makes sense if I had just looked at positioning diameter in relation to boards.
December 19, 20214 yr Popular Post 1 3/4 tubing oughta be plenty strong. Mine's 3/4 EMT. To test it, I stood my 240 lbs on it. No deflection.
December 20, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Made a lot of progress today. Got the lumber rack up and the wood moved and the old rack disassembled. I’m beat. Paul
