July 16, 20214 yr Popular Post Some of you may have noticed I had a 34 inch water oak cut in my yard. Kept most of the wood. this is what the larger logs look like. So a friend wanted some quarter dawn blanks and I picked up a small leftover piece today about 10. I turned this bowl in about 90 minutes. Turned to about 3/8 and sanded to finish. Yes it will still need a finish sanding and I am hoping it goes to an egg shape. For me this is kinda of an experiment as until recently I did twice turn and used a tenon. Now using expansion mode and getting very good results. Not only that but have not had a 1/8 inch tenon break as yet.
July 16, 20214 yr Popular Post That sounds like a lifetime supply of Water Oak. Looks like it turns well, edges are sharp.
July 16, 20214 yr @Gerald Pretty wood! Hope it doesn't crack as it dries. I don't remember why I started using the expansion/mortice method of bowl mounts but I really do prefer the method. It seems to fit into the way I like to finish off a bowl bottom/foot. Edited July 16, 20214 yr by lew
July 17, 20214 yr Author I started using this after a class with Jimmie Clewes in 2019. Once you learn that it does not have to be the full depth of the chuck jaws and leave the proper amount of space on the shoulder it is much more versatile than a tenon., And easier to finish.
