May 17, 20214 yr Popular Post We went to the Springfield OH "extravaganza" this weekend. If you've never heard of it, it's one of the biggest antique, flea markets in the country. It happens twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. I believe there were over 1500 vendors this weekend. We drove about 300 mile round trip to attend, walked and walked for hours and I spent five bucks. I bought a tiny calipers. I told myself it will be great for when I turn finials but really I just thought it was cute. Nickel is for scale.
May 17, 20214 yr Popular Post Curiosity is aroused. The 1" marks to the left & right of the pointer indicate travel in both directions but the tips of the caliper are together. So is there an adjustment that allows one arm to pass the other?

Dang Cal, great observation, I would never have picked that up, it would seem the tips would have to pass each other to make use of the upper half of the scale. hmmmm Right now as is, it looks like the tips are touching, but I think originally the tips were not touching, as the upper leg of the caliper appears to be forged into the same piece as the scale pointer is, so the upper leg is actually on top of the lower leg? That would suggest that perhaps the tips were bent to touch each other at some point? Originally the tips bypassed for inside measures. I think.

You are correct, it does go both ways, very tight fit though for inside dimension. There is also a locking nut on the other side so I think they are designed more for setting a diameter than for reading one, if that makes sense. Unfortunately, I can't find a makers mark anywhere, still a good find I think.

In the original picture I thought the locking nut was a bearing that locked pointer in on zero, makes perfect sense now. Neat little find.
May 17, 20214 yr It just keeps getting better. Now is it a "one off" or are there more out there? Edited May 17, 20214 yr by HandyDan
May 18, 20214 yr Don't you love all that exercise and could only find one thing that you did not already have? Ok I want one too and I may have better than a dozen calipers already.
