That what my Daughter wants built. :WonderScratch:   Something to hang or stand near a wall, and hold a few towels...Ooooh, Kay..:WonderScratch: So, hauled a plank to the shop..

No room for a 7' long plank...we have ways..

Clear down on the end.B)..handsaw is working on removing a short piece of scrap..

Was trying to do the splits.  Measure from this nice, square, defect free end..about 50" more or less...Was trying to avoid..

This Problem Child...so..:WhoMe:

Just missed it.    Since I had a more manageable plank, I could use the tablesaw..instead of..:BugEyeSmiley:

1444048513_TowelLadderfancysaw.JPG.25169671f0ff7334ca07ad63fa2d4cef.JPG

This saw....Needed to straighten out an edge first..:Tapping:

1607951923_TowelLadderstraightenanedge.JPG.e8bd2ee86328b8407654c3cdb8578355.JPG

Then rip the remainder into 2 equal sections..

2087353616_TowelLadder2sides.JPG.a5c22ac782cfc4b7498b54c3719cdc3f.JPG

And now I have the 2 sides for the ladder.   But, a ladder needs rungs, right...

There were 2 boards left over in the shop, reset the rip fence a bit narrower..

307688085_TowelLadderblanksforrungs.JPG.025bc193016b9f5dadc4d5fefac52448.JPG

A kept out the best 5 of the mess....Now, ladder sides tow in at the top, going from 18" at the bottom, to ~13" at the top..oh joy, angled tenons.

First, need an angle to set to..we have ways.

.1754965799_TowelLaddersettingtheangles.JPG.6912a9c1f019359756383c0caeea1ebf.JPG

About 18" later, and the other end is laid out, as well.  need to set the mitre guage to that angle ( ~12 degrees)

1202121618_TowelLaddersettingthegauge.JPG.dc58cc76b7df28a2651b3667822dc3f7.JPG

And make 10 cuts...

1725836890_TowelLadderendscut.JPG.28f5cebcc2d1424b00df62227abe9a33.JPG

Then laid the shoulder cuts...:WonderScratch:

665102771_TowelLadderhalftheshouldersdone.JPG.3aa5f0d2ad1aac2eaa793c3f5d666228.JPG

Had to reset things to do the other half of these..then attempt the cheek cuts..:ChinScratch:

1437479117_TowelLadder.settingthecheekcuts.JPG.57a165632ac6769c7ec76f1c74dfc237.JPG

Mitre gauge back to 90 degrees, too..

1499207272_TowelLadderresetforsquare.JPG.7f7557fb59a19b0adfc2655916af0389.JPG

Then over to the bench, to clean up each tenon...:ChinScratch:

265447111_TowelLadderTenontrimmings.JPG.c3a7aa3f2948dd4f173f2f7a0b1d2cf6.JPG

Olde School Ways.:OldManSmiley:...small hammer, and a SHARP chisel...

1865195007_TowelLaddertenonsdone...JPG.4df8b67b7d619d18f6cd5bfb553b883e.JPG

So...all 10 tenons are now done...3 hours in the shop, everything now hurts...time to stop for today:ChinScratch:

Stay tuned..:cowboy:

Werner ladders.....done.

Well, I was just going to go back to the shop, and get things set up......Riiiigghhhttt...:DevilLaughing::ROFL:

Set up to do beads, and plane the treads smooth....involved drilling a pair of holes through the tenons...:ChinScratch:

1438573107_TowelLadderundersideneededplaned.JPG.19a76f0d881816f00537696d1f7710a7.JPG

Nobody will see the hole, once the ladder is together, and a lot safer to run planes and a router...This be the underside of the tread, was a bit rough...then run a router:BugEyeSmiley: along the edges..

286129433_TowelLadderroundtheedges.JPG.304870b54758c00ee972cabb222ca691.JPG

For a slight round over.  then flip the tread over..

1167111242_TowelLadderneedsatouchmore.JPG.e7a81c3e0ad1ffaca39599f2343bd54d.JPG

And plane this side smooth.  edges can be done over in the vise..:ChinScratch:

1957204889_TowelLadderalittlerough.JPG.ad3a4e86f2d7873b212d221798391c2a.JPG

Some needed a wee bit more than others...:JawDrop:

204950337_TowelLadderneedswork.JPG.f53c6bf5f16e26a8feeeefebc30eca94.JPG

Now, about them beads..:OldManSmiley:..Stanley #45 set up with a #22 bead bit....Set things up for the 1st bead..

1631139422_TowelLadder1stbeaddone.JPG.0205b04ef0779487dbbdabcdbaa0a161.JPG

Then switch things around, and do the other edge...:ChinScratch:

688105685_TowelLadderbeadsdone.JPG.0f13ebae3b35c413df7d35126280befd.JPG

And a 3rd bead appears down the center..:Praise:..then round the corners a bit...100 grit sandpaper to clean down in the beads...:ChinScratch:

1158882013_TowelLaddersmallroundoverbit.JPG.bd5e668dc6b529e485c274e8e0cc83ee.JPG

Just a slight round over...repeat the above for the other 4 treads...then sweep the place..

122825813_TowelLadder.busyday.JPG.5516a21c1c062eaa3fdbe0b22f271a5f.JPG

Twas a very busy day... stay tuned..:cowboy:

Treads done...sides are next...:ChinScratch:

492989360_TowelLaddersides.JPG.68220510b8f405505d2acea946e26683.JPG

Needs the ends cut...the "foot" ends..

415298573_TowelLadderbeveledfeet.JPG.f8f591402534584fc7e4214bb3589568.JPG

Get a bevel cut....the "tops"..

1306005884_TowelLadderlayingoutthecircle.JPG.a616aeaa46881af485913685b4a7fabc.JPG

7/8" radius ...then the bandsaw to try to cut one at a time...using the first to layout the second one...then a beltsander to even things out, a bit...:ChinScratch:

1366671744_TowelLaddermatchingthecurves.JPG.1cebd9ae5d3d64c5c21360dc007333fb.JPG

Then decided the edges needed Jointed so both sides are the same width...Problem?:WonderScratch:

1481777148_TowelLadderreadytojoint.JPG.9ce329fbc32dab568a5f68e028a0c04d.JPG

At 49-1/2" long....I don't think that smooth plane will quite work, so..:Cheer:

571079640_TowelLaddercordlessJointer.JPG.5aa1f0d9781f49420ef9124c66c8597b.JPG

24" long, weighing in at 10 pounds..Stanley No. 8, Type 7....Olde Heft & Hubris himself...however, when I also tried it out as a smooth plane..:WhoMe:

2099326260_TowelLadderNOTasmoothplane.JPG.924d6ddf49f1dc0321c729e5d8136a1a.JPG

had to turn it back over to "Shorty"

Mortises....will be a "compound" variety..:OldManSmiley:

245418759_TowelLadder1stlayoutmortise.JPG.1189b8357400c78f92014c53699f6ace.JPG

Treads sit parallel to the floor, ladder leans into the wall at 12 degrees, sides splay out at 12 degrees...might be "fun" to do?:JawDrop:

1101520693_TowelLaddermortiseslaidout.JPG.12bc2c48937c3f01e799d179d1786c82.JPG

So, today's tasks, after clearing off the top of the bench, was to lay out 10 mortises:OldManSmiley:

1751708536_TowelLadderlayouttooledgework.JPG.f79085d60c16fc4491a7e7adeefaf042.JPG

Carry the angle of the dangle around and mark the other face...then round up the "Usual Suspects":SaluteandRun:

526564586_TowelLaddertheUsualSuspects.JPG.725ccad44ae20d82e471ea4e47f444a6.JPG

And see about doing a bit of chopping...:MachineGun:

1712396827_TowelLadderchoppedhalfway.JPG.49f71eef6cc6aef6a3bbac09ae05a500.JPG

Show face, first....chop halfway down. I have to follow the lines on the sides, to get the correct angle chopped....the flip this over, and chop from the other face, and do a dry fit...

1372218663_TowelLadder1stmortisedone.JPG.f5aa0dca73dcd2e095370c38599d26b3.JPG

had to mark both faces, as to which was the outside, and which was the inside face...set the 5 treads out where I could grab each one in it's turn...

1205521136_TowelLadderfinishedtreads.JPG.c1e748de47dff901cd0f847440df5c9a.JPG

This shows the angles I need to match..or try to

One done..next..:WonderScratch:

829729650_TowelLadder3outof5.JPG.7a71328d815675630821a20b7a8919ca.JPG

3 out of 5 done...there was a problem with a layout..:BangingHead:

769445798_TowelLadderthiswontdo.JPG.729ab06822bdd57389942aa31582381d.JPG

A bit too rough to do a layout on..so:ChinScratch:

1672739992_TowelLaddercleanuptool.JPG.9930a04be0ce2fec9b40c18984514e53.JPG

A few swipes with Shorty fixed that right up...3 done, Breaktime!

2026613764_TowelLadderBreaktime.JPG.d76b511805067c394fb93c92e2620d69.JPG

I also had to stop and resharpen the chisels a bit...Ash is called a Hard wood for a reason...:WonderScratch:

1947744295_TowelLaddernext2.JPG.a40a96e0632ff160c01cc5971908710c.JPG

Have 2 more to do...:ChinScratch:

1606643577_TowelLadder5outof10.JPG.3bf2b90f95e37491e78087ac58a0fc78.JPG

And that will just have to do, for today...3 hours in the shop today, PLUS the 2 last night...may try to get the other 5 done tomorrow...I'm pooped:JawDrop:

Stay tuned...:cowboy:

1010224248_TowelLadderstarthere.JPG.8ce399c33756ad372c72002142c55b5a.JPG

First of 5 mortises, today..was even trying to "time" myself...:KooKooClock:.had 3 chisels to use..:ChinScratch:

1611492763_TowelLaddertodayscrew.JPG.a78cdb4f96ae7ba5f91e2eb110966457.JPG

Turned out, I chopped one mortise in 15 minutes....wasn't rushing  things, but wasn't loafing around, either...:OldManSmiley:

1858958714_TowelLadder2ndonetoday.JPG.59c7b2c02dfae5d07567a9b6da538fa0.JPG

And..at 1330hrs...Short pause to refresh an edge or two.....yes, that IS the hammer I was using...mallet simply bounced off the handle of the chisel..by 1600 hrs..

21831677_TowelLadderonemoretogo.JPG.fc103e8feb5ba9a9914c64e52c280ff3.JPG

Had just one more to do...

682855578_TowelLadderlastonedone.JPG.0e39c605538ce79e0fb245b94ef0c3f6.JPG

15 minutes later.   Decided to try a full dry fit....hmmm....

967240697_TowelLadderfulldryfit.JPG.ec1b7219586e4ca0224b8e3732f260d5.JPG

Took almost as long to do this, as it did for the mortises...will come back tomorrow ( maybe..that Monday thing.:BangingHead:.) and start a final fitting of things, I  have some other things to do to the sides....may need a pack of wood shims, to better clamp this thing up....and then see about making some wedges...

15 minutes for a mortise?   Man, I am getting slow in me old age...:JawDrop:

Stay tuned..:cowboy:

Hmm, I suppose I had better update this story :ChinScratch:

So..pine shims were bought..$1.69 and tax money....then some Rosewood scrap was turned into a pile of wedges..

218220480_TowelLaddersupplyofwedges.JPG.756a1df0b183c6b150610e537aea29c6.JPG

I used the bench like a router table..B)

1711359138_TowelLadderroutertable.JPG.13e27a802304633be3a6097ff9b7b683.JPG

used a larger round-over bit...

1383259628_TowelLadderlargerbit.JPG.f6f2faea65785a38957f27413c62fa03.JPG

And rounded the edges on the two sides....was a bit rough..

807705676_TowelLadderwaitingonglue.JPG.3d0de86ab63ffeb31bdb19014047db99.JPG

Was waiting on a repair....so, the other side was glued up first...while waiting on this to dry...:Tapping:

146791390_TowelLadderonewedgeor.JPG.22f8f126ada269f5af307e7632fc47e2.JPG

usually, one wedge was enough...glue on the tenon, slide it in place, and hammer the wedge home...no clamps used...this time:OldManSmiley:

Side #1 is glued up....Side #2 came along later....was a bit rough to get things all set..:Tapping:

107456907_TowelLaddergluedup1.JPG.d028f6d4976169e1afe7a4cd1b83b44f.JPG

Clamped to the bench, pipe clamps to pull things down tight...rung #4 seems a bit long?  :WonderScratch:

774132048_TowelLadderwavyedge.JPG.d2b12ddc48dba79204849434e638b854.JPG

Just a rustic old ladder....let this sit a day...don't even want to sneeze around it...:JawDrop:

A day later....clamps came off..S L O W L Y....and nothing flew apart :Praise:

Always a good sign?    Then a beltsander, a palm sander, a Spokeshave and that Millers Falls No.9  worked the sides until clean and smooth...got one side done...stain  and a rag to wipe it down.....work on the other side....then stain and wipe it down...and fix any spots I missed :WhoMe:

Then, set this smelly thing aside, to dry a while...:Tapping:
