There are lots of first time things going on with these boxes for sure..This box was the goat so I have a few things I wanted to see for my self. I had nothing on paper just in my head. It is sitting there with 4 screws holding all the pieces together so I could exchange things and then put it all back together. In a round about way this is almost like the rest of the carving I do. 1920926273_IMG_20210205_092802330restarting4.jpg.7193658997a7a76070dbac1ae7f405de.jpg

Like I have different carvings , some up and others down and one end is different that the other.1633846560_IMG_20210205_092815088restarting3.jpg.541ddb43f368c59bc5c888f12f4e745b.jpg

Some of the pieces was in the wood pile from things I built from long ago....Like the handle on the top was the cut off sides from two pieces and I just glued them together back to back and I ended up with about the right length handle for the top. The brown base is four small pieces glued together and the brown top piece is four small pieces glued together and those are holding it all together or else the box would fall apart... I learned not the have the carvings too close to the ends for the wood is tapered 45 degrees and would cause problem later...These mistakes will stay with this box for a reminder for later..al the carving pieces was my own design and they will be pushed out more for the finished product.... and I still can't decide which way the carving should be , right side up or up side down?  And since I tapered the lid, hinges and the screws that close to the edge might be a problem?

Also I don't have to worry about ever seeing another box exactly like this for no one has a weird brain like mine!

Wow!!!

YEP! That Jesse has a weird brain! Just like that DaVinci guy, and that Edison guy, and that Michelangelo guy.

Amazing what a little imagination can do.

Those are amazing ! Wow

Beautiful work, too.

I wouldn't hinge the lid. A flat piece on the underside of the lid to keep it aligned would allow it to be lifted off with the top handle.

Who is going to be the lucky recipient of this latest piece of art?

See the precision hole drilling? A living proof there is no cnc in my shop.

I have a ton of old hinges and drawer pulls and old wooden swivel wheel casters I replaced while in the furniture repair refinish business and lots of that stuff like these hinges I change to fit my needs.. I like to think I can do it all in this shop with what I have learned over the years.

Also the handle on the lid is not glued down. It has a dowel through the pieces so I can spray it then assemble.

Gene with no hinges would be the easy way out but my way of thinking a loose lid especially with the long handle on top would be needing some repairs in the future as the finish will make it even slicker than just the piece of maple wood. Those tile floors I'm sure would not get hurt but I'm afraid the box might end up in the closet.... more of that past experience trying to guide me now!

With a gorgeous handle on the top like yours, hinges would almost guarantee that it'll get dinged against the table, or whatever else it could hit when opened. Unless, of course, you use those expensive stop hinges.

No I just use chain that we have a bunch of to hang wife's glass thingies and as we just bought a 200 foot roll and it was like 16 cents a foot. Remember those Chinese people have cheap labor.. I could not find any American made # 16 Single Jack chain which is the right size for the reasonably small box lid stops. Remember that size in case anyone wants to order some.. but do check prices as Amazon has much higher prices along with the cheaper prices.

The chain we use for the stained glass is rated for 10 lbs not quiet enough to pull a stuck car out of the mud but I think it is still too big for the jewelry box lids and probably won't need anything.

I had forgot about the lift out tray being in the way. I did devise a way for some jewelry neckless chain to retreat back down a tube with a fishing weight tied on the end to urge it along the tube.

More build on the box.

23 gage nails shows a little and I will leave them showing..

Wife is in the cloth part of Walmart often and she gets the remnants reasonable. 18" x 54" was 1.50 and that will cover the inside of a few jewelry boxes.

You might not believe me when I say I missed drilled those holes in the hinges but it is very important once I drill the holes in the wood before I take the hinges off to spray the finish to be dead sure which hinge goes back on which side...and when using hinges that already have the holes drilled to use a marker to identify what goes where even though it really don't matter with factory drilled holes.

I like to use the brown bottle of Aleene's glue for gluing the felt down for it seems to work better with a little longer set up time and don't seep through the felt before it does set up and it stays where I put it. I also use an old credit card or those door keys to the motels to get the right thickness. I also cut all the pieces of felt before I start installing them.

I am sure glad I insulated the 20 x 30 foot section of my shop with all I could stuff in the 6" thick walls and this morning it was right at 50 degrees when I walked in and outside it was 27 ... the concrete floor is much better holding the heat in than a raised wood floor. The 4" purlins I used to start with presented  a problem but I slit 2 x 6's into 3 strips then screwed them vertical every 16" then used osb or particle board ? to cover the insulation. Thick solid sheets of foam I sand witched in between particle boards for the ceiling.

Since this area is not used to minus degree weather I am sure a lot of plumbers will get a lot of attention Monday and Tuesday for it is forecast to be there. Just like folks are not use to freezing weather on the highways here and a few folks done went to the happy hunting grounds...in the Dallas Fort Worth areas.

I read about that huge 100+ car pileup.  Stay safe, and warm, out there Jess.

Cal these idiots never encounter ice on the highways and when they do they must speed up.
