Who knew dropping off a RENT check could turn out a profit.....

So of course with it being the 1st of the month bill pay day for myself and many others.  I was out running errands.  On my way back and to the parks management office to drop off my rent check I happen to spot tree cutters working and removing trees. Before I dropped the check off I asked if I could get a couple of log rounds and they said yes.  I asked for a smaller diameter sized they hacked up a couple branch sized pieces for me by the time I drove back through sitting and waiting for me to grab.  So I guess it paid to drop off my rent check this morning LOL I got lucky.  So these will make plenty of goblets and I'll get plenty of practice.  Material for days.  I'm not sure if its Douglas Fir or Pine.  It's one of the two species.  I'm assuming that its fir.

Yea I was lucky to come across them how ever not sure what the deal is or why this log is wanting to slip on the live center but indeed it is slipping but only if I take hard cuts into the wood not sure why exactly its doing this.  Ah yes I also ordered myself a Robert Sorby 1 and 1/4 inch roughing gouge so that's the first one done and ordered expensive but hopefully worth it in the long run.

Told the wife after I did the four poster bed I would turn no more pine. There is just no fun in it.

Fortunately I don't have one of those to tell me not to LOL.  I don't mind if it's sticky just considering doing one with resin cast on half of one.

The more I start to realize it that these logs that I manage to get a steel on are NOT pine at all.  I'm starting to think they are more Douglas Fir.  Mainly is from what youre saying about it @Geraldsimply because it throws pitch every where when being turned and of course wet or dry.  How ever it has not been doing either I turned it down some more about half way through the log and its feeling more like fir to me at this point not sure.  @Ron Altier I delicately don't think what I got was pine.

As far as the live center slipage I decided to throw it on the face plate today and got a lot further with it just slow turning and slow going.

Pine takes a soft touch and sharp tools.  Turning wet is a real challenge.  Pith is extra soft and the reason you're having a bit of trouble.

The bark and grain look more like fir.  The main problem I had with fir was that the soft part of the grain did a lot of tearing.  I had to turn it, fill it back in with putty and then turn very gently again.

If it does sling pitch and tar, get a bottle of rubbing alcohol and rub down all your tools.  Alcohol will remove it.  It will take elbow grease.  Just my 2 cents worth.
