Plane has been rehabbed...needs a case to get stored in, when not getting used, so....bought some thin pine boards...

Clamped them up for about a day...to get them used to the weather in the shop.  Today's Laundry Detail meant I was IN the shop, waiting on clothes to dry..so..

Cleared off the top of the bench enough to get a bit of work done..

Blue items are brand new bench dogs, from Kreg..

Laid out a few tools..

Sharpened up the pencils.   Checked the Winchester square to make sure it was indeed square...laid out a couple cuts for the Mitersaw..

The Cordless one, of course...and cut a pair of sides for the box ( came back later, and cut a pair of ends, too)

This used to be a 24" long plank....threw out the scrap.   Cord for the tablesaw...

Was never plugged in, didn't need it.   Got the marking gauge set for the thickness of the Pine..

Used the Narex 6mm Mortise chisel to set the spacings of the fingers...."X" marks the waste ones...

First, I had to shoot some end grain...the 2 ends didn't quite match. 

Then carry the lines around....time to set up a saw...

Geo. H. Bishop No. 10 saw.   Lowered the bar until there was 1/2" left...test the cut..

To make sure I didn't cut too deep....then went to work...(decided to just work on one side at a time)

Needed a place to sit down, anyway ( back was getting sore) so...about 8 full strokes per cut, or until the saw no longer cut..

Doesn't take all that long to do...all I had to do was make sure the cuts were straight....

Then set up to do a bit of chopping.....Dryer was done, so was my back.  Turn the shop lights off, load the hamper up, and head back upstairs...one hour was about all I could get in..today.  May try again tomorrow...back willing.

2 hours in the shop ( no Laundry Detail, though)   Did a bit of chopping..

Half way down from one side..then flip over..

And complete the chops...use these to lay out the matching fingers...

Then the bandsaw made a few cuts..

Then the same routine of chopping out the waste..

Half way into one face, flip over, and complete the chops...then a dry fit...

Long side has cupped a bit....then rinse and repeat..

Corner #2 sawn..

Chopped as before....be sure to mark which corner is which..on the inside..

Repeat for the end, and try a dry fit for both corners,,,pulling the corners tight with clamps..

Set a spacer bar, for now....no glue needed, yet..Trying to see how the plane will fit...

Looking like a nice snug fit?    Back is hurting right between the shoulder blades, time to call it a day.   Might get the last 2 corners done tomorrow, maybe?

Well...back did start to feel a bit better....until some dummy decided to head back to the shop......and complete corners #3 and #4..

A bit too snug....will mill a dado/groove where the handle is at....have also set up the Type 20 No. 45 as a 1/4" groove cutter....need grooves for the bottom panel to sit in.

Needed some grooves ploughed..and a dado milled...and a plywood bottom panel cut to size...so...

Dry fit.   Stanley 45 planes, one for the dado, the other for the grooves...

Decided to try to do a glue up...had everything laid out, ready to go...except..

Seems my Daughter had "borrowed" my bottle of glue..

Trip to Wall E World to get a new bottle.  Plywood bottom was a tad too long, buzzed the 1/8" off....then the cauls and clamps..

And let this sit a day....

 

I also ripped and cross cut to make a frame for the lid...

And glued up a panel to make the lid's top...

A little too wide?   Well, I can trim the wide section down, to balance out with  the skinny section...Let this sit overnight....

OK...Sunday Morning.   Last night, a very BAD headache arrived....shut the shop down,until this morning...removed the clamps, knocked the cauls free..

Cleaned the corners up...with both this old jack plane, and a sander...or 2...leveled the top edges..

As I wanted to add a rebate all the way around..

Needed a chisel to help out at the corners....then set the plane in the box...

And then sized a pad for the plane to sit on...and glued that in place....and set the box aside, for now.....

 

Lid panel came out of the clamps, next.   Needed to clean up the glue joint..

Try and find the glue joint, now....Panel needed trimmed to size ( and squared up)

Then started doing rebates..

Long grain wasn't too bad to do....but..

End grain called for a different sort of plane....

Ok....then, needed grooves for these to sit in..

Then the rest...

Which left one more joint to do...

To match the dust seal rebates....back was getting very sore, again..been a busy day..

Busy, busy, busy.....

Even the bench was a mess....I did a wee bit of layout..

As I have finger joints to mill, next time in the shop.....

Came up with this idea....last night...

Trying to cover up all the square holes left from the grooves and rebates....

 

Will try again later, and see IF I get a little better making the cuts...right now, I am waiting by the mailbox.....then we'll see...

Got tired and fed up, waiting on packages that never came....4" of snow was "too deep" for the mail to be delivered...

 

Took me frustrations out on some pine...

had corners to connect...

The lid's panel needed trimmed a bit...fancy cuts needed made...

Started with a miter cut...

Had spots to remove...like..

Matching cuts on the shorter ends....a dry fit....or 10...

Kept narrowing the panel's width, until them gaps went away....then some glue, and a few clamps..

Will have a lid....will clean it up...tomorrow...right after I shovel a path for Missy Prissy-toes to walk to my front porch......

...Ours got delivered with 13.4" of snow, of course nothing but junk mail, & bills. 

Well...sidewalk met with approval...parts were delivered, today...

These are the Long Rods...so I can have a little more room between the fence and the plane...the other package?

This is the "Main" Depth Stop....the 2 holes?    in case I would want to add a piece of thin wood to the stop, cut at an angle....like a champfer. 

 

Ok, Lid came out of the clamps today...

Not the greatest looking thing...we have ways

One end was a bit too high...we fixed.   Beltsander to even the 4 sides to the box....

Then clamped the lid in place, and add a pair of hinges....then flip the box over..

And add a latch to keep the lid....shut

hey...it even works!

Used a block plane...

To roughly round over all the sharp corners....then a sander to soften them up a bit...

 

Found a 1/2way decent brush, and what is left of the Gunstock stain ( not a whole lot left.. )  and gave the outside a colour change...

Intend to add a Stanley label right about here...

Fingers on the lid are a hair bigger than the rest of them....

had issues with the first set of hinges...tossed them, and went with these...

Not sure how much more I will do on the inside....something about holders?   We'll see...

 

Needs a coat of varnish, once the stain has dried...and a few labels printed up

Seeing I've sometimes been told I'm all thumbs, I'll give you...

 

Been a LONG time since I sat down and coloured something...

Just to make a label for the lid...

There IS a base coat of varnish....rubbed down with 0000 steel wool.    Label is glued on with just ..

A coating of this stuff....then rubbed down flat....same with the two on the end..

But, at least these didn't need coloured in.   Waiting on this glue to dry, then a second coat of varnish will go on....might even varnish the inside?

 

Stanley didn't spent much on labels....only what they thought was needed, nothing else...

This one being the most important one to them....
