Got the scroll sawing done now to carve

Featured Replies

I decided to look for something else to do. I printed that indian from the files here on the Patriot but then I don't do things like that so I went looking for something more challenging and wham bam I did indeed find something that might eat my lunch before I am finished carving this thingy...

To start with my scroll saw will only handle 20" and I made the pattern 25". So if things looks wavy on each end you will know why.503839346_IMG_20210121_183035035latestcarving.jpg.0305a95dc3971c66566ff0e797172743.jpg

I have had this pattern since 2016 and after I enlarge it and looked it over real good I said to my self, self you don't know nothing about carving yet, so I stored it....and now I only have about ten things started laying all over the shop but wanted something different to work on...Yesterday I attached the pattern and sawed the outside away. And as I cut more away I can see to put screws along the edges through the backer board. This morning I sawed it in to a bunch of pieces which is easier to hold while grinding or what ever...next I will take them over to the band saw and shorten lots of the pieces which will cause less grinding later.  Most all the pieces will have screws holding them to the backer board. The screws holding the interior pieces is much hard tp install for I will use a straight edge and measure from the edges and mark the ack side where a screw will go in to all the interior pieces. This takes longer than the scroll saw takes sawing all the picture out and in to pieces.

In 2016 I printed out a matching pair of this picture with one being a flip of the original picture and this morning I did find the picture but was the flip of what I had cut out....This means all the pieces were flipped from what the picture I found looked like....Before I start to carve something from a picture I always have 2 of the same picture, one to cut up and the other to go by... The picture I had saved on the computer I deleted after I printed out a left and a right so there was no reason to save the original. So the only picture I had was the flip of what I had cut up to carve. I finally got the pieces back on the backer board like you see in the picture so this was yet another lesson learned the hard way.

So after I got the pieces back on the backer board I took a picture of it and printed a copy so I won't be playing in the dark kinda.

Next picture will be after I shorten all the pieces that needs to be shorter..then the grinding can begin.

One more picture for Sat,1896854360_IMG_20210123_174617134thirddayonthiscarving.jpg.2a87d774813f5d900019b903c609a09b.jpg

This is what I call ruffing all the pieces in and am about half way in it!

I enjoy this type of woodworking the most....

Looking good Patch. I like the area that resembles lattice work, I think that's the first time I've seen that in one of your works.

Looks like a great start to another masterpiece. Keep the progress pics coming.

Bob, this picture looks like it has lots of up and downs in its structure plus there is many new curves and switch backs also new so I'm going much slower and studying each part before I ruin some of the things that will make this a nice picture to look at...Its good to have a backer board under all these loose pieces for I can carry it to where ever I need any certain grinders and sanders...maybe I'll get out there before the foolball starts this afternoon..

Okay, Sunday noon.1237561415_IMG_20210124_124531059sundaynoon.jpg.554478932ba25ed96a04f6634606cdfc.jpg

Any body seen a spring like this.  It showed up where I'm carving and have no idea where it came from...never seen one like this and might be hard to find another if I figure out where it goes...its in the lower picture... This morning was one of the very few times I cleaned off the work area and it showed up while I was grinding  with a small angle grinder....maybe goes under the trigger of one of the grinders?

I'm like a kid with a new toy for every time I get a little more ruffing these things in I can't wait to get it in place and see how the picture keeps changing with each new piece in place.626201739_IMG_20210124_124754031sunnoonwithaspringIdontknowwhatitis.jpg.ea84dbc8781f179394edfbf119978302.jpg

Tuesday morning.1586873013_IMG_20210126_094020780tuedaymaornig.jpg.3e098fd9fe1fed66c6baefcf5bdbbd2c.jpgI'm starting to add height to some leaves. I'm using some 1/8" dowels but they don't measure the same so I use a number bit that will be a tad larger than the dowel... This is from a number bit set and I use these bits more than regular drill bits..20 sizes from #60 to 80..

I'm putting two different heights to the mesh screen in the same area in the upper right side and will be a bugger to glue all the pieces in without some glue showing!!!!! Waiting for glue to dry right now.

Pretty much sums up how it works for me to see the progress in your pics Jess. :)

That's looking good Jess. The lower area of that mesh looks like it might get a little tedious in there.

Bob, this is where I use metal cutting blades with the scroll saw. First reason there are no reverse teeth to accidently pull the wood off the table. And the second reason I have metal cutting blades almost so thin you can see through the metal for they are so thin!  I have already cut those last holes and finishing up with the smoothing of the pieces.. Then I like to make sure the pieces are the same height where the pieces are mated up with other pieces 816281877_IMG_20210127_125343033Wednesdaynoon.jpg.a0602a591ae236efec08bfb0ef43ef07.jpg

I'm putting the mesh looking stuff two different heights and the bottom sections are five pieces for each piece to be glued up for each hole, and easy to loose a few pieces like the one off color piece in this next picture which don't match the area ... What I do is after I saw out the four pieces leaving the piece in the middle that looks like a cross.. I then take those four pieces a shorten them by cutting off the top sections and the bottom pieces will match up where the came from.2141481228_IMG_20210127_093245047Wednesdaynoon.jpg.c74e1b42add19a36b5852cc01c9a6205.jpg

Most people who carve with knives uses bass wood cause it very soft and easy on the knives. I like to use maple for its hard and holds its shape real good...

This last picture was taken a couple of days ago for most of the pieces has been smoothed out better than in this picture...

I don't do much sanding for the 1/16" diamond coated bits do a great job of sanding  for me... If you don't have a catalog from www.woodcarverssupply.com or look on line at their stuff...I wouldn't be carving with my Dremel if it wasn't for this company....

If anyone chooses to do some carving in the style I do notice how most pieces I make the small ends or the pieces I choose to grind down lower than the other end of same piece I make the connections in to a V shape so the one piece will stay put and the sawing will hide after the finish goes on. Usually the upper end of all the pieces have counter sunk holes before any of the carving begins so all all the pieces will have a definite place already established.

But like when I didn't have the right picture to go by only the same pattern but had been flipped and a bluming headache....beginnath.

Lots of pieces to this puzzle!!!

Thursday noon. 1775366033_thursdaynoon.jpg.4c950e5e8f9f8f1c7814758ceb51fdc2.jpgI think I am about finished with the smoothing of the wood.

These diamond bits do almost all the sanding. I turn the speed down to 2 or 3 on the Dremel and use a circular motion. 1/16" shaft so the diameter of the diameter ball is about 1/4" on down to 1/16" so one has to take his time and let the bits do the work.

Thanks Cal and you too Gunny for the exclaim. Cal I was a beer drinker all my young life but the day we opened the go-cart track that ended . Somebody had to run it and being sober seem to be the only way. I had quit smoking one day when I was about 44 years old and that wasn't hard to do so I thought if I didn't have beer around was all it took and it worked....funny too for I had thought having a headache all day was a common thing back then but that ended the same day I put the beer away.

My wife and I have wine with supper but not the entire bottle. :D  little wine is good for the soul. Now my neighbor drinks beer like we breath air.

:throbbinghead:

This one came out real nice Jess.
