January 14, 20215 yr Popular Post I made another bowl. It is 11 inches in diameter and 4 inches tall. I put some wipe on poly on it and had a few bad spots show up that I couldn’t see before. I started over sanding from 60 grit back up to 400. Looks a lot better now.
January 14, 20215 yr Popular Post Looking much better. You might try starting at 80 instead of 60. Then the process will not take as long. Usually only necessary to go back two or three grits to clear most sanding scratches,
January 14, 20215 yr Popular Post Agree with Gerald. There have been times it was harder for me to remove sanding scratches then it was to remove the tool marks. Looking good though.

When I went back to add the second coat I saw a few areas with a lot of reddish spots. It took a lot of sanding to get rid of them but all is good now.
January 15, 20215 yr For tear out you can also spot sand the offending area instead of the whole bowl. Thanks for the clarification.
January 15, 20215 yr Looks good. Sanding is easier if it is one continuous surface too. Sanding into an edge is always harder whether it be a bowl or a spindle turning.
January 15, 20215 yr I usually start sanding with 60 grit sand paper just because it is rougher than 80 and gets the job done so much quicker than starting with 80 grit. I've tried starting with 80 grit but I found that it just takes far too long. If you use 60 with power sanding youll find that it will just eat right through most all of the tool marks and get a pretty decent rough sand start. Then of course I work through the grits 120 220 320 400 and finally up to 600. That's the usual route that I take when I sand.
