What would have been the handle to box attachment method used by the Shakers? I don't know for sure Cal, but I'm thinking a clinched nail. FlGatorwood, lew, Cal and 1 other 4 Quote
Popular Post John Morris Posted November 28, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted November 28, 2020 Or, in John Wilson's manual he uses a rivet. John is pretty accurate with his carriers and boxes. See attached .pdf J Wilson Shaker Boxes.pdf Larry Buskirk, p_toad, kmealy and 4 others 5 2 Quote
Popular Post kmealy Posted November 28, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted November 28, 2020 (edited) I've made a Shaker sewing box that is basically an oval box with a swiveling handle and another box with a non-swiveling one. The non-swiveling one uses some of John's copper nails that are a bit longer than the ones you use to assemble just the box. They are peened over on the inside. I think I'm going to put some of those berry boxes on my to-do list. How is the bottom attached? Edited November 28, 2020 by kmealy lew, Cal, Larry Buskirk and 4 others 7 Quote

Run a thin glue line around the top of the sides on the bottom side, all the way around. Clamp the bottom to the sides using painters tape. Popular Post kmealy Posted December 19, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted December 19, 2020 Just out of curiosity, how did you find working the 1/8" thick material? Other than Shaker oval boxes, I am not sure I've done much in that thinness. Cal, John Morris, Gunny and 2 others 5 Quote

I had to be a little more creative for glue clamp-up and the box joint index pin on the jig showed much wear after set-up and making only 5 boxes. My index pin was made from cherry wood. I may consider using a brass set-up bar next time if I had many to make. Danl Cal, Gunny, p_toad and 2 others 5 Quote
