The idea was simple. Build the bench, then have kids write their name on the edge of a piece of basswood held in the bench’s leg vise, then plane off the shaving (along with their name) and place it in a box for a drawing the next day. The winner would take the bench home with them." October 26, 20205 yr Been working on a expanded version of my charging station for cordless batteries. In finishing room now. Few days before ready. Built this in with extra room just in case. Next up is a box for my forstner bits. The cheesy box they came in sucks. They fall out of order when I close the drawer.
October 26, 20205 yr Went to furniture bank today and we got 12 of our "cubbies" built. They are our alternative to dressers that take too much time and material. Six little pockets and some fiber baskets, and can at some time be used as a bookcase, TV stand, kitchen pantry, bedroom dresser, toy storage, etc. One other guy and I cut parts for about 20 more for Thursday's crew.
October 26, 20205 yr Had a great day selling and demoing at the Ag Museum Saturday so I have till 11/4 to replenish somewhat as we again are demoing there for 4 days. Went to the gunshow yesterday and found ammo for the Mosin so will be going to the range maybe tomorrow.

October 26, 20205 yr Popular Post I seem to have a thing for box joints, found this article on making a jig... https://www.woodcraft.com/media/W1siZiIsIjIwMTgvMDUvMDIvMTEvMzEvMzgvNDYzLzgzX2ZwX0JveF9Kb2ludF9KaWdfRklOQUwucGRmIl1d/83_fp_Box-Joint-Jig_FINAL.pdf?sha=5f9fd98fe2a3ec3e First run, my old dado set wasn't making a smooth cut, so ordered the Freud set noted in the article. The two-fer is a pretty neat idea. Did a trial with 1/4" (a bit too sloppy), and the 3/8" (too tight - probably push all the glue out.) Some small adjustments and I'll try again tomorrow. On another note, I had made slider (barn) doors into my basement shop from a couple of old fir doors. I was wondering how to keep them closed. Found some round RE magnets with a hole in them, so I made shallow holes in the edges with a Forstner bit, and screwed a washer in the other door. Works pretty good. I'm always looking for an alternative to the big A. Found a PA company that specializes in magnets of all shapes and sizes, and quick ship too. Hope it's OK to share this site: https://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=RE22CS-P

Friend gave me a box of small 12 mm ones he bought online. Said epoxy did not work with them. I cleaned them with Xylene and they held fine for something I tried. Having a screw hold them would be my preferred method. $5 a pair ain't too bad. Nice size as well, 7/8 with a 1/8 thickness. Perfect.

A friend gave me several packs of these magnets that are used to put a diaper on a forklift. Do not put them in your pocket.
October 27, 20205 yr Popular Post Working on Forstner bit holder to go in drawer. The box they came in is terrible.
October 28, 20205 yr Anyone have any plug cutter sets or brand they prefer? Thinking I would like 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and 5/8 to start out with.
October 28, 20205 yr I've got a few of the ones labeled "RTS-2000" from Woodworker's Supply and they really are good. But other than the cheap Mibro ones (they suck) these are the only ones I've used.
October 28, 20205 yr I have tried several different sets and my favorite is the ones they sell at Lowe’s with the spring centers. They give a nice tapered plug and seem to be lasting. Paul
October 29, 20205 yr I have been away from project work and will be for little while. I decided I needed to totally reorganize my shop. Emptied every shelf and turned over every drawer and am putting things back in a more organized manner. I just couldn't take it any more. Looking for things I knew I had and having seldom used tool in convenient locations while more used tools were not that accessible. Threw away old finishes, paints and practically empty cans of various stains and lubes. I found a bunch of stuff I totally forgot I had. It is amazing how much stuff you can tuck away in nooks and crannies then forget about. I have old tools and duplicates that I never use. I am going to get rid of probably 100 lbs. of old stuff that is not worth the shop space. I also need to do a pasture fence walk to find and fix weak points before winter sets in hard. The engine blew on my John Deere 400. Parts are not available so I can't rebuild it so I have to buy a new engine and that is going to set me back a couple grand. And I thought I would be able to retire and relax a bit. I don't know how I ever had time for a job.

Label everything consumable you buy, when it comes home, before being used, with a DATE. i.e. 28 Oct 2020 Now when you come across a can and wonder when did I get this, you can look and see. This takes discipline to stay at it and do it EVERY time. But sure helps long term. Even do it for blades and sandpaper on machines. Here are few examples, older pictures but you get the idea.
October 29, 20205 yr https://wlfuller.com/html/plug_cutters.html I know Stick and I had discussed this long ago. Fuller makes some nice stuff.

October 29, 20205 yr As relates to Magnets----In my shop some of my aluminum blast gates are installed vertical or nearly so and located in hard to reach places-----enter large 1" magnets---place one on the gate--it is held in place by the steel stop---loosen the stop screw and all one needs to do is open or close the stop, no screw adjustment required to hold the stop in position. Works well for me.
