September 29, 20205 yr Popular Post So....I still have a set of Pipe Thread Taps..and a single Die...that also would like a box to call their own.. . Will select the best out of the "extras"...and go with a 6 pc set of taps....1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" and 1".....and hauled those to the shop....extras went into a drawer in the Small Tool tool chest. Set them out onto a backer board, and arrange things a bit....kind of stair-stepped them out.....needed to find a good angle to set things up at....so... Needed to reach a ways...Then ripped apart a pine 1 x 4 scrap....lots of cuttin-n-fittin going on....couple pieces were recycled because the size cuts were a tad...off..a Monday thing Finally about to glue and clamp a holder of sorts, using the taps as spacers to get things close...almost... Glued to the Poplar backer board. There is still a spot for the pipe die to sit in... Drill a 1" hole for that....still room for any other Dies that might show up. Let this mess sit a day, then start building a small box around it...won't be quite as big as the main set... Stay tuned...
September 29, 20205 yr Popular Post I have made holders like this two other ways. One I made a block and drilled through for each one. Then cut in half. Gave me rounded groove to sit them in. Other way was a router with a ball bit and then glued edges to it. Note: they all took alot of time. I ain't @steven newman
September 29, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Rack to hold the taps came out of the clamps...and got cleaned up... Added some pads for the smaller taps to sit on.. The reason the pads only got so far? Push down on the end...Tilt-a-Tap.....used a wide chisel to better shape the slats...some were a tad too tight... Working on building a box around this rack... More Dovetails to make.....and grooves to plough...Will adjust the height, after the bottom is grooved into place. Rack will sit on a 1/4" plywood bottom panel. Will see how the lid "shapes" up.. Stay tuned...

September 30, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Plan for today...lay out a few things...like where the rack will wind up in the box.. Hmmmm, may have to work on lowering that tap down a bit...and, maybe the next one, as well... Ok, time to build a box... The "Usual Suspect" were rounded up...Pins first, so those got laid out... Use these 2 as the spacers...so things don't get too small, or too wide.. Some handsaw work....Then, set up a chopping block.. Chop out the waste, from both sides of the board... Pins cleaned up...ready to lay out the tails... And chop these out....about ready for the dry fit? Rinse, and repeat for the next corner...and test fit the rack.. Yeah...might fit...repeat 2 more times, and try again.. Should work.. By the time I got to this point, I had about 3 hours in the shop....Stanley 45 is all set up, ready to plough a bunch of grooves...tomorrow. I think that will be enough, for one day? Stay tuned

October 1, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Happened to remember...I was also on Laundry Detail today.....went back down to get the clothes out of the dryer....saw the set up Stanley 45.....and went ahead and plough 8 grooves,,,thats 2 per side....So..tomorrow I can work on a plywood bottom, and the poplar top panels....May have to glue the Poplar up, to get the right width...
October 1, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Grooves are done... And...they even line up.... Twas a BUSY Morning, today.. So, now I am having...Lunch. those shavings are mainly from doing a little Panel Raising.. Starts with a jig of some sort, and a STOP line...which I usually run right over... Tools? A Stanley No. 4, Type 10, and a Stanley No. 60-1/2. A single bevel is planed, until it will fit into the groove..I do the end grain first...on both ends..as when I then plane the long grain sides... It will erase any tear out at the edge. Looking for a nice sharp corner...again, test for fit... Then the fun part...see IF this will fit into the box.... This is the second Dry Fit....first one showed the panel was a tad too long...about 1/8" or less....miter box to remove, planes to re-do the bevel to fit the groove There are 8 square holes to plug, later.....I can match the grain from this scrap of Poplar, cut and fit to each hole..sand flush, and watch them disappear. I think I can put this plane back into it's box, now.. Still have to cut the 1/4" plywood for the bottom of the box, figure out where to split the lid off at...and drill a hole for the die...and lower the two large taps a bit... That can wait, until after I finish my bowl of Beef Noodles... Stay tuned
October 2, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Tap holder has been reworked.. . Die has a new home.... 3 largest taps are sitting a bit lower....( was just in the shop to take these 2 pictures..when 8 clamps showed up...)Soo.. Did I mention they had a bottle of glue with them? Yep, 8 clamps....should be enough? Let this mess sit overnight, and see how it turned out.... Stay tuned
October 2, 20205 yr Popular Post That one die looks lonely, needs some friends. Time for a walk around through the neighborhood garage sales.
October 2, 20205 yr Author Popular Post There is plenty of room for others, when they ever show up.. Box came out of the clamps about 1400 hrs. today...was looking a bit rough.. We have ways... I WAS going to square plug those holes... Went with round plugs, instead...time to slice the lid off? Marked a line all the way around, 3/4" down from the top edge...the fiddled around with the bandsaw...table was a hair out of square to the cut....got that fixed...then it was up to the operator... Hmmm...left that as is....as they match up well enough... There was a BIG pile of sawdust inside, too. Then, clamp this up in the vise, add a couple hinges.. Flip it over.. Add the latch..which seems to work just fine.. Was also rounding all the square edges off....then glued the rack inside... Then trimmed a foam pad to fit, and glued it into place... Now...will the taps all fit? Seems to....even the lid closes on them... BTW..I am waiting on the stain to dry.. Even the bottom was stained... Maybe tomorrow, I can add a coat of varnish? Almost done.. Stay tuned
October 4, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Installed a card holder on the lid...only place big enough for it.. Then set this up where it will call.."Home" Other two card holders ( they come 3 to a bag.) Nothing fancy... so, I guess I should post this over in the Gallery? Lid fits a little too well....had to "pop" it open...had a spot of varnish holding things shut.. Can almost see the saw kerf? A little better? May spend the next week or two...on a vacation and doing clean up in the shop....thanks for looking in..
