July 23, 20206 yr Popular Post comment_236352 So, after finishing my Purple Heart project which was a first for me using a tough wood. I've dived into the Hazardous materials list and went with African Padauk for the next project. I'm in contemplation here, I thought the PurpleHeart wood was tough to cut into but this stuff is just as tough if not tougher. WARNING AFRICAN PADAUK CAUSES HEALTH HAZARDS WEAR A MASK. So far I'm enjoying it though. Basically rough cut the blank into a round and now trying to decide where to go with it next. I'm considering the same as the PurpleHeart Mess bowl. I haven't made a full decision on it as of yet but I do really like the red orange tint to the wood. Its a nice color and should make really nice for a bowl. I'm not sure as of yet but I am planning on doing another tenon cut on this one as well, so hopefully I can do this with out getting any wobble in it on the first go rather than having to do things at the last minute. Either way this one should turn out interesting in the long run, I think I should be golden if I can keep up to two projects a week. Report

July 23, 20206 yr Author comment_236355 Just had a glance over that quite interesting. that it will turn to a brownish gray. Still should make for an interesting piece. Report
July 23, 20206 yr Author Popular Post comment_236358 Not as much wobble this go around. A little bit but not as bad as the last one. Report
July 24, 20206 yr Author Popular Post comment_236369 This one I can say is JUST about DONE. Either which way I wont be working with Padauk any time soon again. It is messy you get caked in orange sawdust.... SHEESH. But in the end this one is turning into a decent little bowl. Just about finished. Planning on at least 2 more coats of stain if not 3. Then it will be time to chop off the tenon and try out me new 1 1/2 inch stoppers from penn state industries. I'm pretty happy with this one as well. Report
July 24, 20206 yr Author comment_236371 This one wound up turning into the little brothers birthday gift so it had to be a quicker finish. I've got a couple more myrtle wood blanks on the way and a maple blank I believe all 6x6x3 I like those dimensions so I will probably stick with them for a while. Report
July 24, 20206 yr comment_236372 Looking real good Andrew. If you didn't like this wood don't bother with Teak. It'll cover you with green dust and stain you green. Report
July 24, 20206 yr Author comment_236373 EEEK GREEN DUST????!!!??? Thanks for the heads up LOL. I will probably wind up doing another purple heart one at some point that was actually fun to work with. Id also like to acquire some cherry and black walnut as well. Report
July 24, 20206 yr comment_236374 It's an oily wood, that will stain your fingers green. It doesn't just wash off. DAMHIKT Report

July 24, 20206 yr comment_236377 @Gunny, Naw, it wears off eventually. Used to work with it a lot when I worked at Liberty Coach. Report
July 24, 20206 yr comment_236403 You have come a long ways in a short period of time Andrew. Looks great Report
July 24, 20206 yr Author Popular Post comment_236433 Well seems like the Penn State Industries stoppers do the trick even better than the stock stoppers. Thanks @Gerald for the suggestion... I think I'll also be trying out the concave bottom this go around as well. But ran a test fit this morning and yea seems to work might be tricky when it comes to doing the sanding but I'll figure it out I suppose. I went with a very very slight convex shape at the bottom this time I was unsure of how shallow the bottom of the bowl was so I decided to play it safe but it should be just enough to sit flat for any surface. A couple more coats of stain and a bit of clean off and I'll call this one done. Edited July 24, 20206 yr by AndrewB Report
July 24, 20206 yr comment_236450 ...Looks like I might have to get some different chucks, and tooling if I decide to try turning bowls. Report
July 24, 20206 yr Author comment_236451 I tried and experimented with it and, quite frankly I'm enjoying it. Just gotta get a hold of better hollowing tools with negative rakes. I suggest starting small. Edited July 24, 20206 yr by AndrewB Report
