"What's It" Basic Rules Reminder

For a full run down on this project and rules please go to: "The Patriot Woodworker and MWTCA "What's It" project"

  • Only Patriot Woodworker Members are eligible to participate and receive the award.
  • The MWTCA only accepts a verified source to support your answer, so one should be submitted with your answer, such as a patent, catalog entry, tool book reference, or a respectable website on the subject. Do not let these requirements prevent you from having fun and submitting educated answers on the subject without verification, we can worry about references later. All answers are welcome, as well as healthy debates regarding "What's It".
  • If a verified and referenced answer is not arrived at by the end of each month's "What's It" project, a random draw will be performed for a "One Year MWTCA Club Membership".
  • Only Patriot Woodworker's who participate in this "What's It" topic will be included in the random draw.

Additional What's It Rules

  • Unless you are completely sure what this item is, please avoid "definitive statements" that appear that you are without a doubt claiming that you know what the item is. For example stating, "this item is called a "widget xx" used for "insert purpose here". If you are making a definitive statement you must accompany your statement with evidence or proof from a secondary source.
  • An example of acceptable statements within the realm of having fun and educated guesses would be something like this, "I believe it could be", or "It appears it's made for this or that", etc etc etc...

Ok ladies and gentlemen, we now have our "What's it" live and ready!

The image(s) below is a MWTCA "What's It" image for you to research, and tell us all here in this topic post, just what the heck is it!

Got no idea here. Looks like the shaft at front either adjusts in and out or is removable. At the back cannot tell if that is a punch, drill bit or a folding prod. Also how can the crank handle move with those pieces sticking up.

I am with Gerald here; it sure would be nice to see a few pics of the business end of this contraption.

This sorta reminds me of an online auction I was looking over the other night.  Some of the pics were small, some upside down, some just out of focus...

Large can opener....Thumbscrew held a cutter, 2 arms rode the top edge of the can, crank advanced the cutter around the can's rim.   Wide back end was just a handle.

This is prob way off base, but my first look reminded me of my wife's yarn winder. It screws down for a tight base and rotates with a crank to wind up yarn, maybe wire.

I have no idea, but it does not look like the can opener that we used in the cafeteria and kitchens that I have worked in.  It may be a fence or yarn winder, but I see no gears or place for gears.  Got me stumped.  :(

This thing-a-jig is really something.  As usual it would nice to have more pictures.  The crank really bothers me as to how or what it turns?  Makes no sense to me as pictured.

What if the crank just moves the tip upward a small distance and pressure on  the rear causes it to drop down . This would create a dimple or line. Still no idea what the purpose of that would be and what goes in that open square at the tip.

Take a close look at the area right to the right of the handle....note there is a groove....that turns a 90 degree bend for the rod to rotate into.

 and therefore it ????????????

Mybe the square hole slips down or a square rod in a food prep table?  The cast leg is where the #10 can gets slid up against.    Housing for the crank is then slid back by the fluted handle towards the end.    Rod is a hold down.    Handle rotates a gear tooth to open the lid of the can.   Handle will rotate when the housing rotates,

Or, maybe the whole thing just shift gears on a belt driven lathe?

Your other right......that LONG round object sticking straight up.   That small round disc on the handle...could be the cutter to open that #10 can of Navy Beans....
