March 23, 20206 yr Popular Post After 27 years the plastic shop sink developed a leak. Not something I wanted to repair and it looks terrible inside anyway. So I removed the old cabinet / sink. Wondering what was I thinking when I built it. I used a hollow core door for the one side??? Really? Not much was proofed against water, yeah and 27 years showed me the error of that idea. Fixture once cleaned up was still good, so we can keep that. Had another sink I got from somewhere for free, it will do. Unlike the other sink this one has no lip over so I had to build the cabinet close to the size and stand off about 1/16 inch all around to account for the sink not being exact square in shape. Figures. Someone threw away a truck toolbox top at work. Cut it down to size and squared it up. The diamond plate makes a nice back splash and not much will bother it in the way of chemiclas. Since I am in this corner I opened up the wall an got started on working my way down the entire length of the shop replacing the pegboard with OSB. Adding some electrical outlets as I go. For the moment I am only coming out about 4 feet. Just enough to get the sink done and the shop back in working order. So I got started here: old sink and the newish sink Moved on and closed up the wall once I added a stud close to the corner, reducing the distance between studs to 16 inchs. Whole shop is 24 inches, I didn't build it but I will fix it. Got it prepped for paint. At the bottom I added a u channel of flashing to protect the OSB from mositure. Also caulked the bottom of the OSB, just to make sure. Used oil based primer to seal the wall up. Then a couple coats of latex from the closet for the deck. Have plenty so I am using it up. Dry fitted the diamond plate and put insulation on the plumbing. So after a weeks worth of work this is where I am so far.
March 23, 20206 yr Nice job. That is going to be great. Also, I like that magical pipe where you can get hot and cold water from the same line.

Not shown yet is the small 2.5 gallon hot water heater that goes underneath the cabinet. Had to move where it used to be so a new level plate had to be made. The shop was built on a patio so the floor and level will never be in agreement. Edited March 23, 20206 yr by Woodbutcherbynight
March 26, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Couple nights of progress getting few items coated with finish. Took the stiffener that I cut the welds to from the back of the top I got. Cut it down and bent an edge on it. This will go on front towards the top and be some protection against whatever I happen to be washing off. Got a laugh at the embossing on it, BetterBuilt. Coated the sink with a some conditioner and let soak in sun all day. Much better looking. Let the front cure well in the sun after 4 coats of poly. And finally got to assembly the Corian to the front face and mount to the cabinet. Have some sanding to do to match edges and round over the front of the corian that faces the sink. Dry fitted all my plumbing and got that all in order and ready. So I should be able to assembly the sink tomorrow and seal it all up. Installed a leveling plate for the hot water heater, concrete is sloped both ways so that was fun to get set up. Started the door assemblies this evening. Glued them up some and wait till tomorrow to do next part. Going to use two more pieces of that stiffener for kick plates at the bottom of the doors. Why waste it???

March 26, 20206 yr That is really dressing up that corner Gunny, almost to be a shame to wash dirty hands there

Today I was able to get sink installed and all plumbing hooked up. We once again have running water, hot water and drainage. Even got the soap dispenser put back up. Waiting till tomorrow to confirm no leaks then I will put the side one the cabinet. But good time to take a picture of how I did what just in case. Doors got the tops added to them this evening, and they check out square and when checked to the cabinet they fit. Next is some hinges, oddly this size I do not have in stock. Will fix that tomorrow. The one door has a piece of the stiffener I had left over. My plan is to cut it into two pieces about 4 inches tall and install as a kick-plate at the bottom as shown in picture. Doors will get a coat of yellow on inside, protection against water, and same aluminum paint I used on the rest of the outside then 4 coats of poly sprayed on.
March 28, 20206 yr Author Popular Post No leaks found, used baby powder last night and checked this evening. My stainless steel screws came today. Removed all the temp screws for the back splash and installed those. With that done I put the side of the cabinet on then wrestled the paint cabinet back off the dolly's and put it where it goes. Finally have my shop where I can walk around again. PLUS, I mounted a towel rack. Classy!! Doors got some paint this evening, should be done in a few days.

March 29, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Took the frames to the router and made a nice smooth rabbit for the panels to go into. That left me with rounded corners. So I did a @steven newman and broke out the chisel and hammer and slowly made the corners square. Not nearly as skilled as the master, but once done the panels fit tightly and don't fall out when waved around a bit. Good enough for me. Still have to dry fit and set up for hinges. Then apply some finish and this job is just about done.
March 29, 20206 yr Popular Post I like it. I woulda just gone to the resturant supply and picked up a used deepsink and threw it together.
April 5, 20206 yr Author Took some time to complete the finish work on these doors. As I had some left over aluminum from the stiffener I decided to install a kick plate at the bottom where you know big feet toe kick the door. Came out better than I had hoped overall. Few minor obstacles like the one wall is not level and the corner of the building is nowhere near square, bent maybe but nothing square. Total cost ion this project was $10. Had everything in stock except the yellow paint. Enjoyed the entire process, had some fun coming up with different parts to fit as I envisioned, and have a functional sink / cabinet that will last a long time.
