Turning Safely with Headgear

Care needs to be taken for anything that is put beyond the tool rest.  I try to never reach over the spinning wood which is why I came up with these wire burners.  I was never comfortable reaching over to hold one end of a wire.

Excellent idea, Dan.

I know that I am late, but I was late being born and been that way since. I almost always wear a face shield.  I intend to, but once in a great while I forget and somehow, some of the voices screeches out to me that I'm not doing it right.  I have learned to wear a surgical or 3M air mask when I saw or sand.  I have lung problems, especially since I shaved off some masonite one time.  Please wear a mask to filter the air while sawing.  It's a pain, I know, but rather wear the mask than spend time in a hospital wishing I was home doing a project.

Face shield:  Unless I forget, I wear a face mask.  This week, I was making my first attempt at inside out turning.  Oh, I had a catch. The wood flew out of the tailstock and chuck right toward my face.  That was a completely new experience for me.  Like Lew, I was finishing up a cherry bowl once and I blew that bowl apart.  So, I try to remember my face shield.

My sleeves are never below the elbows while turning.  I love my arms and fingers too much.  I have no desire to share them with anything.

You’re not late, you are posting a measured, well thought out, intelligent response. (What can I say, I was a spin doctor in a previous life LOL)

Really, the same thing goes with a lot of spinning tools.   Not much different, but i was using a soft brass wire wheel today to clean up some stackable Great Neck saw blades and it did (as it always does) throw wires.   Usually they end up flying off into the garage somewhere, but upon occasion they end up stuck in my hair, clothes, or (like today), in my thumb.   I never felt a thing, although usually if they hit my bony head i know (glasses to protect eyes always in place).   No, gloves are never an option with a wire wheel.   The soft brass is literally soft enough i can stick my hand into it and not have it ripped off like the steel wheel on the other end of the machine.

*p_toad, can you use the Brillo pad stuff instead.  The name escapes me at the moment, but I find it is very good at removing and polishing rust at the same time.  I find it easier on the metal that I am trying to salvage. And, it is also easier on the hands unless you touch it while it is spinning.
