Ok, shop in the midst of a tool cabinet build....decided to pare the pile of tools down a bit, so the cabinet won't take up the entire shop...

Between the screwdrivers, and the push drills....needed to reduce the herd a bit on both...(Brass one is now retired..)so...

Went through these...any defects caused one to disappear from the crowd....broken/missing springs, selectors, prawls...bent shaft....and I was left with these...and the singleton..

For then BIG jobs..The push drills?   I retired the Millers Falls ones...since I have 16 tips for the 3 North Brothers #41s...

Just need to learn to sharpen them tips...

squares...combo squares needed cleaned up...

Will keep both of the 6" squares...trying to decide on one or two of the 12" ones...the speed square..

I use that to figure out what angles to set the mitersaw to.   There are a few all-metal try squares...all went into a drawer.  Will sort through the wood handled ones tomorrow.  

Egg Beater drills have their own til...limited space...helps control the size of the crowd.   Brace drills...were getting out of hand...14 of them!

Soo..today...sorted through the mess at bit...

Green circles are from Germany.   left one is worn out, right one was retired, anyway,  Red circle?   Made in Japan...IF you see a brace head with those two lines...walk away.  There be potmetal inside of it.

The other 2 were locked up, and or bent...There was also a clone of a Stanley No. 945-8...no markings, wrist handle frozen in place...Into the drawer with them.  Which left 8 more to sort through..

This be the P.S. & W. Samson #8012.....12" sweep.   Not the largest one I have... but close.  Fancy chuck will hold tightly to about any type of bit  you might use...

And this be a Stanley No. 730-14.....14" sweep, bearings everywhere...for those really BIG bits.

 

This is one of two 10" sweep braces....a Millers Falls No. 22..the other?

The rings on that handle are made of Pewter.  Drill was sold as a Keen Kutter N 104.....methinks it was made by Millers Falls as a #1053....10"

8" sweep drills?

One of 3 "good" ones...from about 1905...Goodell Pratt Co.  No. 408...uses a stick shift to go from forward to locked to reverse..shaped like a loop.  the other 8" braces are twins

And..

Two.   Stanley 945-8....trying to decide which to keep....there are two 6" sweep drills..(  keeping both..)

Keen Kutter KB6.....made by Millers falls as a #1054...I think..the other is a Stanley..

marked as a "X3  6in"  and is for the USA O. D.     ( United States Army Ord Dept.  )

Need to go to Menard's buy a stack of either 1 x 10 x 4', or the 1 x 12 x 4' boards, on sale I hope...and then build a cabinet to house most of the "good" hand toys...er...TOOLS.

The "Before"?

Might make use of some of the wooden parts....And, find a shelf for the power tools.  Maybe some pegs to hold the braces on....maybe stack them up on that peg? 

Quite an educational post on older tools @steven newman.  Having completed this how many college credits??  

 

Organizing a box or boxes for that herd is going to take some time.  Will be a interesting post.  As for making boxes or stuff for the shop, I could spend alot of time just doing that alone, and feel real good about it.     Who am I kidding, I do that anyway.

Roh-kay, Raggy.....this Egg Beater drill...

came home with me from Wapak Get together at Fred's place....part of a tub of tools...got to working on it today.   Found a metal part for the floppy handle, replaced the bolt holding the handle with a pin

Handle has a threaded insert to attach to the drill...someone drilled through that and added a bolt....

Pin is a bolt, driven through and ground off, almost a drawbore sort of thing.  handle is now rock solid

The bolt holding the crank to the drive gear...is wrong....didn't have one that was the correct size and shape....so..

I countersunk for this bolt, for now.   There is also the Goodell Pratt Company logo on the crank.   Greenfield MASS.  

So..need some red paint for the wheel, some JBWeld to fill some holes...and this G-P No. 329 drill was look like new...

Can crank this as fast as you like, it will not make a sound as it turns....a quiet, Cordless drill....From Mr. Ducksoup....

New paint is done, waiting on the JBWeld to dry..

Changed the bolt on the crank.

Yes, the Millers Falls No. 2-01 really is that big...( wonder IF I could exchange that Craftsman Egg Beater drill?)

 

Sorted through some of the excess tools..getting things pared down a bit..Yankees?

Down to these 3....Squares?

Should about cover things...while I had the red paint going..

Old red handles, got a new red....til is looking a bit sparse..

8 brace drills, and 3 combo squares.   May reuse that rack, in the new cabinet? 

Don't have much else to do, but hide out in the shop...

Guess I had better start a Build-along thread about that?  May have to buy a couple more sticks...

 

One "casualty" of this cleaning jag.....the wooden book of auger bits.   Trashed the box...placed to bits inside it in with the rest of the bits....

 

I can just imagine how it would be...to try to spin a #20 bit....using a brace...there is indeed such a beasty in that pile....BTW #20 = 20/16" =   1-1/4"

 

there was also another Irwin Expansive Bit in there...gives me 4? 

 

Some of the bits needed a wire brushing...badly....sizes in that "book"?   from the little #3 up to the #20....

Pine was cheaper than what Lowes wanted for their gold plated Pine....

 

Found a few of those auger bits to be from Craftsman.....wonder IF I can exchange the dull ones?

Yes..I only have ONE gouge right now...that super long 3/4" framer with be in the rack at the back of the tool well,  the rest?

 

Trying to make a rack to house them near the bottom of the doors....where I can lift them up and out, as needed.  Thinking using a 3 strip form...thin strip, glue a bunch of thin (blade thickness) blocks, spaced to leave room for a chisel, then another strip to cover the "slots"   and then a few screws to attach it to the door...the "third" strip..about 1/2 down the length of the "average length" chisel blade, and thick enough so the chisels just rest on it...to keep things from swinging too much...

 

Not sure what I'll do with this other chisel...

Marked as an EC Jennings, 1.25" wide.  Octagon bolster.  NOT the OEM handle...may work on that at a later date...

Ok...three strips of wood.  One was a bit too thick, but will work anyway.   second was a tad thinner, but was about the same as the thickest chisel...chopped that down into a pile of "spacers"...then laid things out a bit...getting the spaces just right..

Wider ends are for pilot holes foe mounting screws...dab of glue under each block, wiggle around a bit until it "sticks".

3rd strip was a bit too thin, so it was made into a "keeper", more glue, and a few clamps..

Ever wonder what a spring clamp was good?   Now we know.  Let this sit a day or so...then if the hand allows, clean it up with a plane.

Will need one more strip...for the blades to rest on...instead of swinging around.   May soak this rack in shellac a few time...steel and Oak don't play well together...

May see about some "keepers " for other tools...ones I can rotate out of the way, to pick out a tool...or, keep the tool in it's place...
