Rocking chair ID

Featured Replies

Hey @John Morris - some time back you said that you might be able to id the style of rocker this is.

This was my grandmother's rocker.  I have no idea where or how long ago she would have got it, likely in the 1930's or 40's maybe.  Don't know if it was new when she got it.  I do know for certain that it has rocked many babies asleep over the last 70 years!

It is a pretty heavy duty solid piece of furniture.  It has been painted a few times and the seat recovered several times over the last 50 years that I am aware of.

What would this style of rocker be?  I would like to see more items like this and really don't know where to start.

Now that is a fine example of a rocking chair.  I can't help with identifying the style but I sure am glad you posted it.

I'm not sure that I have ever seen a rocker with that style of front legs. It appears to have held up well these many years, love the arms.

I have seen some a bit heavier than this one from the 1800. I would say on those 1860 thru 1890. I think this may be a little newer possible late 1890's.

Found this labeled Empire revival. I think Empire is what I was thinking of as very heavy and dark colors from mid to late 1800's.

Found another similar said image.png.be6e3dacc1935f6b4cff3740acd6a25f.png 1940's.

Cal, let me dig up my Sotheby's book on furnishings, I am sorry I had not gotten back to this! Looks like Gerald may be on to something as well.

Wow Gerald, that one listed for sale blew me away with the price!:BugEyeSmiley:

Looks like I need to investigate Empire revival...

Bob, that pic is a pretty close match also - but doesn't give me any info about it.

Keep that info coming folks:)

It looks like you have a keeper, Cal.
