December 21, 20196 yr Popular Post Made some special ornaments on stands for my siblings. They are inside out ornaments with little glass bead angles in the windows. Ornaments and stands are made with old growth Douglas Fir.

These have 8 angels per string so 2 ornaments per string at I believe $4.99 each string. They are glass and throw a nice prism of light in the right light. There were two sizes of angel, these are the larger of the two at one inch tall. I took them off the string and mounted each angel on one of these pins. I made a wire cross for the top inside of the ornament to mount them to. I have more to do and can get a picture of it if there is interest in it.
December 22, 20196 yr My wife has a thing for collecting angels, I'll have to give something like that a shot. No doubt it won't be nealy as nice as yours tho'. Really nicely done.
December 24, 20196 yr These are very pretty. Great wood choice, too! I have been watching some videos on inside out turning but have not tried it. These inspire me to give it a shot soon. Nice work!
January 3, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Finally got around to showing how the angels are installed. I start out with an eyelet pin and two wires then solder them together in an "X" with the eyelet perpendicular to the "X". I accomplish this by placing the "X" on the rim of a shot glass and have the eyelet pin hang down inside the glass while soldering them together. After that I measure how long the legs should be, cut them and bend eyes on the ends. There is a special pair of pliers for making the eyes. Here is the string of angels from Michael's craft store. They are strung with clear fishing type string. Eight on each string is perfect for two ornaments. Last time I was there I found them in colors and those are what I am using here. I string each on an eyelet pin and bend the pin over at the bottom and snip off the excess. You may want to add small beads over top of the angels depending on how big the windows are to make them centered in the windows. Then just hang them on the hanger made earlier. Notice how the arms are bent upward some. I drill a hole down through the top of the ornament, slide this assembly in through a window and finagle the center pin up through the hole. The bent arms will conform to the inside of the ornament when the center pin is pulled up through making for a nice snug fit. Make a nice hanger stand for it and there you go. I changed to a "C" shaped bend and like it better. I like how is is centered over the stand.

Most common asked question is how do you know how much wood to leave behind on the first turn. If using one inch square sticks of wood turning one inch deep measured from the corners is a good starting point and would be the calculated the same for other sizes. 1 1/2" square sticks of wood could be turned 1 1/2" deep measured from the corners. On the first turn the windows are being formed. Make sure to leave the ends square for gluing when turned out for the second turn.
January 4, 20206 yr Popular Post Thank you for the tips. I really like this concept. If I take a shot, I will update my progress.

Took that shot and so far so good! Cyprus wood turned, sanded, lacquered, split, and re-glued. Just have to finish turning the outside without destroying it! It has one piece of wood with a crack that could be problematic. I have tried to stabilize ir with epoxy so maybe will finish it up or wreck it tomorrow night! Time will tell... January 14, 20206 yr Popular Post The stress cracks in the one piece of wood were a bit problematic but I am going to call this first attempt a success! After all, It didn’t fly completely apart! Learning! Feel free to offer opinions... Edited January 14, 20206 yr by Bundoman
January 14, 20206 yr Author Nice! I like the window size. My first one had small windows. Took some experimenting to get the bigger windows. I was afraid of going too far. The window is big enough to maybe fit one of your snowmen inside or maybe turn one to fit.
