December 17, 20196 yr Popular Post comment_212696 I thought I would see if making this thing from a picture after I told jttheclockman it looked simple enough. Well it was not simple for it took me a half day to get this far..I delayed the carving just to see what all this heart thing involved.. I found out to make everything look the same as the picture a few of my sizes need to be changed here and there. All the sizes of each piece were guessed at and it does go together but not exactly like in the picture. Mainly the two wood rings I made using 3/4" wide wood and if they are reduced to say 3/8" wide and maybe even a hair thicker would make things line up better. Also its important to get the correct slant for the legs. But mainly just wanted to see if I could make it from that picture. I thought the picture was fake for they didn't slant the end of the legs. So I guess you can use my picture as a pattern. Report
December 17, 20196 yr Author Popular Post comment_212701 Hey, I just now went back and read jttheclockmans post and it is great that all you guys was offering lots of ideas. Not everyone thinks the same and sometimes a person keeps looking for the exact answer he is looking for even though no one else sees what he is looking for... Here is a few things I found out that helped me on this project. First off even though I had clamps to help that wasn't enough to secure the bottom of the legs kept slipping out ..This solved that problem and I didn't want to start gluing anything until I was ready. Next I needed things where I could reposition the loops on tops of the legs. So using the dowels solved that. Next cutting the rings where they could be glued back without the glue line showing I used ash wood on the legs and the rings for ash has dark and light grain and will cover the glue line. Also the longer the cut the stronger it will be later and don't even think of just cutting across the grain. Also I used the thinnest blade I have and when sawing I made a zig zag so the two pieces will mate back up and stay in that position while the glue is setting. Also just my thinking but I believe the pieces that holds the rings on top of the legs maybe should be only about 3/8 to 1/2" wide so anyone thinking the cuts in the rings might be hid inside those pieces and can easily see as the rings are free floating they could move the rings around while looking for the saw marks. The rings are not glued back yet but the crack closes up enough where I don't think it will ever be noticed. Thanks Ash wood!!! I used 1/2"BB for the heart. And since I rounded the edges of the legs I think the rings needs to be rounded also before I get her done. Now back to the carving!!! Edited December 17, 20196 yr by Smallpatch Report
December 18, 20196 yr comment_212743 Looks like you are off to the races Jess. How did you get the rings inside the rectangular holders? Report
December 18, 20196 yr Author Popular Post comment_212768 Cal the rings will spread out enough to slip in the holders and each other. I had planned on boiling the rings in the microwave for a few minutes and that will make them spread out a long ways but that was not necessary on these. I will take the rings off to round the edges of the rings and smooth out the saw marks on everything. I think after gluing them back together the saw marks will disappear. Report
December 19, 20196 yr Author Popular Post comment_212843 Got it all glued up and happy to say it mostly lined up with the picture. The glue lines are hard to see. We will be married 58 years the 22nd so I might scroll saw some names to go on it. The anchor was my assistant on this project!?. Report
