Ornament finish

I'm trying out a new finish on ornaments with coarse wood or spalted wood,  as in this case.

It is a finish that hardens in the sun in 3 minutes or with an ultraviolet light. I used some spalted maple and the pieces I chose got bad as I turned. That is when I put them aside, didn't like them. I read about a finish that is for coarse wood. I think I paid $14 for it. I got out the old course ornaments and applied it with an old artists brush. I hung them in the sun for 5 minutes, wanted to make sure. I sanded with 400 sandpaper and 0000 steel wool. Then I sprayed clear finish on them. I am very pleased, they came out very good and you have to look very close to see faults.

Cool stuff.

They came out VERY VERY good!

Thanks for the tip Ron.  Great looking ornaments from where I sit!

I first sanded with 400 sandpaper, by hand. Then tried sanding on the lathe at my slowest speed. Although both worked, I had to very careful on the lathe not to build up too much heat. I am sure that if I did it would gum up and ruin the finish.

Don't know what the original flaws were but they sure look great now. I like the design and pattern on the left. Nice work Ron.

Not just good...   very good!  Nice.

Great look on that finish. Where did you find it?

@Ron Altier, those are absolutely beautiful turnings.  Thanks for showing and educating us.

I found some Ultraviolet light curing glue at a supermarket bargain bin. It featured a tiny bottle of glue and a tiny UV light. It was normally $10 and was reduced to $2. I bought a couple. It did work well if used properly. I ran out of glue and went on Amazon to buy more. Much cheaper there.  That is where I saw the new finish. I tried it and  it went well. Hand sanding with 400 seemed best. Then I sprayed with clear finish and it came out like a glass surface. I am still experimenting and will post results soon
