A little Christmas decoration tinkering

I have a reasonably decent lathe that I bought most of ten years ago and am ashamed by how little it really gets used.  I do like to get it out and tinker with it every now and again, usually around Christmas when I have some time off of work.  I made some of these last year for the house and they were well received so decided to take another crack at some multi-species snowmen perhaps for a few gifts this year.  Included here are Red Cedar, Ash, Mahogany, Hickory, Mulberry, and Walnut plus whatever the ink dyed toothpicks are made from.   I used a mix of finishinG techniques.  I claim only to be a rudimentary “woodhack” turner but the skills are improving and these are good practice and a bit of Holiday fun!

Nice job on those. Think I like the two ball snowmen best and may have to steal that design.

Those are my daughter’s favorites as well!  Enjoy!

If that’s rudimentary woodhack, I may not want to try turning. They awesome!

Really nice! Snowpeople are almost magic I think.

Thank you so much!  I appreciate that.  With work and family commitments, I turn wood about two days annually, usually around this time of year, and sometimes think I may never improve past the basic stuff I have been doing, hence the “rudimentary” comment.   I do find lathe work very enjoyable though, and should work to prioritize finding more time for it.  I believe there is much to be learned for me in turning and see a lot of things I want to try.

The more I make, the more I feel like making them!  😜

Very cool Brent.  Great job on them.

Those look great, however I must warn you, it can become habit forming:D I enjoy making them and have branched off into many different designs. My wife, daughters and grandchildren keep saying,"make more"

Those are great!  Apparently you have natural skills.

Yo! Ho! Ho! @Bundoman Those do look like fun!

Stealing your designs with no apologies!  :D

Very Nice...  and Merry Christmas

Thank you so much!   Glad you like them!  Have fun with them!  With freehand turning and no plan, they are just like people with each one unique!

As stated in a prior post, the snow people are addictive!  I was warned but didn’t listen!  Total stands at 17 for the week.  I am getting much quicker and that is good!  Merry Christmas to you!

How tall are you making these? When I started making them last year they were about 3.5 inches tall and I drilled the bottom so it would be lighter to hang. Now they are at 2 to 2.5 inch and no drilling. It is amazing how such a simple item can have so many designs.IMG_6156.JPG.38d9f6589f7bbe648f3311848958c2ca.JPG

I love them.  Did you put the jewels on the hat on by using tweezers?  They appear to be perfectly spaced.

Those are snowflakes I found at Dollartree. They have adhesive but do not sitick on wood well so i drilled a hole and put the eye hook thru it. IMG_6232.JPG.19a033a8d0fb4eb6fcfbc49f83a250d9.JPG

Mine range from 2 to 10 inches.  The larger ones would be “tree tippers” and are really for the coffee table or whatever.  Heck...not sure there really was a plan for these!  Lol...  Anyway,  I haven’t made any to hang at this point but have a couple of the smaller ones where I may go there.  Funny thing is that a dozen went to work with me today and none came home.  Sold them all!  I do like the added snowflake you have placed on yours.  As a tree ornament, it adds a little flare!

Yup...Addictive!  The count stands at 32!  I think that’s about it for 2019!
