Gunny Posted November 26, 2019 Report Posted November 26, 2019 Yeah, explain that one to the insurance company.
FlGatorwood Posted November 26, 2019 Report Posted November 26, 2019 I suppose that he was not the designated driver and didn't know how to lower the bed. Or, the hydraulics stuck the cylinder in the upright position and it could not be lowered. Anyway, I hope one of those is the real explanation. Otherwise, he just cleared a sign for future tall loads.
HandyDan Posted November 26, 2019 Report Posted November 26, 2019 Driver got killed here some years ago. Hit a bridge like that. His trauma came from the abrupt stop.
HARO50 Posted November 29, 2019 Report Posted November 29, 2019 Happened here in the mid-80's. Took out an overpass under construction. Closed the highway for most of the day. John
Larry Buskirk Posted November 30, 2019 Report Posted November 30, 2019 Homer Simpson at the wheel! Doh!
Smallpatch Posted December 1, 2019 Report Posted December 1, 2019 There are lots of underpasses back east that we did not know about until we were leaving Buffalo after visiting Niagara Falls and was fixing to drive along one of the great lakes leaving out the east side of Niagara and my wife started screaming turn right turn right, now. I slammed the brakes on and looked at her and she said did you see that sign on the front of the under pass and I said no... Well it said clearance 11 foot and our motor home needed more than 12'4". And sure nuff we had one of the travel catalogs showing where all those low bridges are located and we never went east of Texas for the next 15 years in the motor home..... You tube has lots of videos showing bob tail trucks crashing into low overpasses and they mostly live in those areas all their lives but never drove anything that tall.... Some friends of ours went under an over pass in Seattle in a mini motor home and they live there.. They were fixin to show some texas friends their big city and was going to go in their friends motor home but the ones that lived there said no we will go in ours for I know where to go and I would have to be tell you where to turn and all that's stuff.....And in a few minutes they ran under the low bridge and ripped off the whole top....and was stuck there for a long while.... Turning off the interstate to get to the parking area to the Niagara Falls is a clover leaf off the interstate on to a north and south road and once you start under the circle the lane we were in slooped down to 9 foot clearance so all I could do was move over to the left lane which was high enough for us to go under without hitting so I just started honking the horn and started moving over. Every thing was just fine except wife was screaming what are you doing????? She is usually calm being my spotter or director or what ever you call someone who holds the maps and gives directions....
FlGatorwood Posted December 1, 2019 Report Posted December 1, 2019 We have a low overpass here in Pensacola. Folks will go rent a box truck and run under the bridge. And, every time I have rented a box truck, the person checking out the vehicle will tell me how tall the box is. It's normally marked on the front and back of the box. All you have to do is watch the signs. However, in the Buffalo area, with all the busy and hurried traffic, it would be easy to overlook or not see.

kmealy Posted December 1, 2019 Report Posted December 1, 2019 When I was in college, a couple of summers I worked for state highway department doing new expressway construction. One Saturday, an earth mover crossed the highway with his bucket gate up and took down the power lines. I rand the truck up to the intersection to stop traffic from going through. Many people were upset because they were going to the golf course just past the incident. Geez, one more exit on the expressway and come back half a mile. Think about all the people without power or phones.
p_toad Posted December 1, 2019 Report Posted December 1, 2019 Years ago SWMBO and i were traveling some road in a furrin state (think it was PA?) and going up a steep hill and some guy in a semi was trying to head up that selfsame hill. There was a rail over pass further up the hill and he wasn't too sure he would clear it so i drove further up the hill - parked - and let him know over the CB his clearance... I think he got through with a couple of inches to spare. Don't recall, but seems like that road dead-ended into another road at the top. That was all BC (before children - when we actually had a life).
