When one couple decided to add a family room to their home they first drew up plans of the proposed addition, then made a scale-model of the house with the new room. Plans, or a working drawing, are necessary both to assist in getting estimates and in obtaining a building permit. This particular home owner had previous drafting experience, so his drawings were fairly professional. Inmost cases an accurate, although fairly rough drawing will be adequate. A scale-model helps in two ways, first it shows how the home will look with the room addition, and second, aids a contractor in determining the cost of “cutting-in” the new roof.
