Should an oak burl be turned dry or green?

Featured Replies

That's what I was asking myself as I was turning this very dry oak burl that I had purchased at the local auction. Most of the shaping was done with scrapers and it seemed to take forever. Most of my turning experience has been with spindle turning for various candle stands.

I haven't turned a lot of burl and what I have turned was dry. I know "regular" wood turns nicer when it is green but then you run the risk if cracks, checks and splits as it dries.

A bowl gouge or carbide cutter would probably made more shavings and less sawdust even on that dry piece.

I love the color and shape and the fact you didn't try to hide/fill the natural defects. To me, those add character.

Looks good to me!!

I agree with lew.  It’s certainly nice to turn green wood, but then you should only rough turn it so it’s about an equal thickness all around.  Then you can place it, along with some shavings in a brown paper bag and let it sit until dry....and hope it doesn’t crack.  However, I do like the bowl you turned...very nice color and leaving the defects accentuate the bowl.

Nice piece of work. Burl woods always fun and a nice sharp gouge is general best i find.

Most of my turning is green wood and I use several different ways of drying it quickly as I'm a tad impatient.

If anyone is interested I'd be happy to run through what I do.

I’d be interested in how you dry the blanks...I’m like you and don’t have a tremendous amount of patience.
