"What's It" Basic Rules Reminder

For a full run down on this project and rules please go to: "The Patriot Woodworker and MWTCA "What's It" project"

  • Only Patriot Woodworker Members are eligible to participate and receive the award.
  • The MWTCA only accepts a verified source to support your answer, so one should be submitted with your answer, such as a patent, catalog entry, tool book reference, or a respectable website on the subject. Do not let these requirements prevent you from having fun and submitting educated answers on the subject without verification, we can worry about references later. All answers are welcome, as well as healthy debates regarding "What's It".
  • If a verified and referenced answer is not arrived at by the end of each month's "What's It" project, a random draw will be performed for a "One Year MWTCA Club Membership".
  • Only Patriot Woodworker's who participate in this "What's It" topic will be included in the random draw.

Ok ladies and gentlemen, we now have our "What's it" live and ready!

The image(s) below is a MWTCA "What's It" image for you to research, and tell us all here in this topic post, just what the heck is it!

Finally something I knew what it was.

You can still buy a very similar caliper from Harbor Freight (where's Herb, @Dadio? )

But maybe they were wondering about the extra what looks like a pivoting pointer on the one leg?

Exactly, the inside caliper function is well known, but what is the extra fold out piece of steel for? What is the purpose of this caliper, and what is it called?

Looks to me like an inside caliper with a micro adjustment. That’s what I’m assuming the extra leg is for anyway.

Inside caliper with a longer leg allowing for wider measurement. Such as a 4 inch caliper can extend to six with the leg added.

I'm thinking it was used for measuring a hole being bored.  Set it to the hole size, reduce the caliper with that leg,  Once it fits in the hole small cuts can be taken until it reaches the set diameter.

Could also be used to measure a groove cut inside a bored hole maybe for an O-ring seat.

Lots of odd out there.

What is Jenny caliper?

Fixed point 'Jenny' or 'Hermaphrodite' calipers are specifically designed to locate the centre of a round or square section of steel, and are also used for marking off a constant distance from an edge. One leg holds an adjustable point and the other leg features a locating lug
