August 8, 20196 yr Popular Post Because, I had spent $7 the day before the Mitre Box find.....soooo Price tag said $8...bought it for $6...needs a little TLC? There were a few "Gems" in this mess... 2 countersinks, 2 screwdriver tips, and German "center" bit... A #20 bit, and twist drill bit...and a Irwin No. 21 expansive bit..without a cutter I think I could use the one in the #22...but not the #1... Inventory? I cleaned a few, to ID them, but.. The 3 off to the right? P.S.&W. Co. Smallest of the 3 is a #8...8/16" That one in the center, with a slightly different flute pattern....Bates A very Motley Crew? Spade bit, with hex shank, no spurs...Concrete bit...piece of the carbide insert in gone ( junk) Somehow, I doubt IF the twist drill is a #12.....as 12/16" is 3/4"...as for the cut up bit? Methinks this were for a 3 jawed Breast drill, or hand cranked drill press... Those other gems? had a few like them, so cleaned them all up.. Smallest bit is a #4, the Gimlet is 3/8", the center bit is 5/8" I now have 4 countersink bits, and 3 screwdriver tips,,,should be enough, for now.. Box needed cleaned out, in more ways than one.. 1/2 rust..1/2 gunk....soaked it in Oxyclean overnight, this morning a HOT water rinse and let it sit out in the sunshine to finish drying out Outside was dried off....and given a "Basic Black" finish... Letting that 85 degree sun bake the Rustoleum....Might have a couple handles, will see about a latch... Wire wheel to clean the bits....rather a bit messy...have to also watch so they don't catch in the wheel... stay tuned BTW: the $1 extra? Atkins/Sheffield panel saw... Cut out the glare... Will tackle this restore, after the bits are done....
August 8, 20196 yr Popular Post @steven newman, I've got a couple of five gallon buckets full of bits, etc. that need cleaning up. If you need something to do.

August 9, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Oh...I don't think I'll be bored for a while.. Not sure, IF this was a factory done item....all the way out to the toe (front) of the plate...as for them teeth.. Sometimes called "Cows & Calves"...aka Snaggle tooth You almost have to file these all the way off, and re-cut new ones....might take an entire day in the shop....let alone clean & polish the plate... Might wait a bit....have drill bits to do....
August 11, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Ok, threw out the broken concrete bit, not safe...and bought a new bulb for the grinder.. State of the art, right? Well, the "Before" pictures.. and.. Motley bunch...checked out the stubbies.. With a 2 jaw brace.. Seemed to work.. Had to wear the shop apron, to keep me clothes clean, but... Mostly Irwins, a few Fultons, a Craftsman or two...sizes run from 20/16" down to 4/16" , note the number stamps...the "7" is for a 7/16".... Couple of P.S.& W. ( PEXTO), couple of Bates. Spade bit is a Craftsman.... Took almost as long to clean me up.. That brace is an early Goodell Pratt Co. 8" sweep... May get the box done, later....thn that saw. Sharpened up that old Stanley chisel, to scrape the rust off the saw plate... Stay tuned
August 12, 20196 yr Author Popular Post NEXT! show side...and. . Price tag reads 1.00........ Drill bit box is about done.. handle on each end..as they are needed... Almost full.... have a use for this...involves this ... To turn snaggle teeth... Into something a bit better..may take a second sharpening... Getting there...may need a new file, too... You might be able to see the freshly shellacked handle, with the polished brass bolts...."old" teeth awaiting a file to come by.. Stay tuned Edited August 12, 20196 yr by steven newman

August 12, 20196 yr Popular Post Had a guy come into the Restore on Saturday and he was going to donate three old(er) handsaws. One had a nice Disston button and a big "V" on the plate. After I showed him that he decided to keep that one. Couldn't read anything on the other two (yet).
August 13, 20196 yr Author Right leg has a skin infection...was unable to do therapy today....They had to check for blood clots, first....Laid up for a few days.

August 16, 20196 yr Author Pills are working. Knee is getting better on the left side.....right knee has hamstring issues... Figured IF I simply sit down on the Shop Stool, I could get some more saw teeth filed.... Shop Cat thought he was helping Got all but the front 6" filed sharp...then the hand cramps started in... Notice the difference? Not only ugly teeth...tooth line was ~~~~ a bit wavy.... Can barely make out an etch.....Atkins didn't really stamp them too deep, anyway....plate was a bit too hard.... Was sold as a 24" Panel saw, when new. Maybe tomorrow, if the hands are full of cramps...I can finish the sharping....Saw is stamped as an 8ppi... No, those are not kinks in the plate...just a few pits, is all... Stay tuned
August 17, 20196 yr Author While waiting on the SSI payday next week, so I can get a new saw file....spent yet another dollar bill, this morning... And cleaned up this afternoon. A No. 17 rip saw, 7 ppi, 26" long. Never had a medallion.. Handle needs a 4th coat of shellac. Steel bolts, were never plated. I can get 3 fingers into the grip..index finger has to go along the side of the handle. Still trying to read all of the etch.. Made in New Haven CONN USA.....there is a logo spot between the "No." and the "17" and between the Trade Mark. Trying to read those big block letters....sharpie, block of wood, and some 220 grit paper, hand sanding. Teeth could use a tad of sharpening...right now, it rip cuts fast, and straight.... Was a bit skimpy today....toolwise... Upon further review...Seems it MIGHT be a "CRUSADER" brand saw, sold by Belknap...at least that is what the letters seem to say.. Maybe get the admins to enlarge this photo? Edited August 17, 20196 yr by steven newman
August 23, 20196 yr Author OK..Got things ready to go... Big files to "joint" the saw teeth. File in the handle needed replaced, new file is by Craftsman Did not need the saw set ( too big) Used this stuff, to polish the saw plates a bit....so.. Jointed the last of the teeth...yep, they were this bad. New file in the handle...worked on the teeth for about 20 minutes... Not perfect, but the next time I do sharpen this saw, I can make all the teeth better... Test drive in some 1 x 6 Pine....going to be a Carpentry Saw...as soon as the operator learns to saw a straight line.... Can barely make out the etch...Atkins saws were very hard steel, and they didn't etch them very deep. Hung this up with the rest of the panels saws. Which leaves that 26" rip saw to finish up...maybe tomorrow? Not too bad, for a dollar?
August 24, 20196 yr Author Crusader saw is done, for now....Plate is shined up I put a good coat of the polish down, then a high tech polisher... run this around a while, wipe things down with a rag,,,and then run the polisher around on the rag... Then some 1500 grit paper in the sander...set up a pine board, for a test drive of 10 full strokes (waxed the teeth helped) If'n ya buy a 26" saw, you are expected to use the entire 26".....7 ppi rip Results? I had the Millers Falls No. 214 saw set out, and cleaned up, just in case i needed it.. Anvil is set to a "8" on the dial....May set the teeth at a later date... Not too bad, for a buck....
